HDD has bad blocks/scanning software

Its a maxtor 200gb sata drive, not sure on the model number though.

What can I use to scan the disk and get the bad blocks un-mapped? something that works from within 2k would be good.

Also when blocks are unmapped, does this stay in the controler, or is it acctually written as data in the file system? becuase I am thinking of formatting it in a few weeks.

The bad blocks are probably quite old, Ive only started to notice recently becuase I used it to back up another drive.
Event log has about 50 entrys about bad blocks.
