Work PC for Dad
My Dad wants me to build him an office PC. He uses statistical analysis programs, word, excel, browses the net and likes iTunes. Other than that he doesn't stress the computer too much. His pre-requisite is that it does all that fast, so I need your advice - what CPU, cooler, MoBo and RAM combo would achieve this and run cool, no need to be very fancy as I said, as he doesn't really stretch a computer's abilities! I'm hoping to make it nice and quiet. Also, what do you think of the monitor? He wanted one about 20", would it run off onboard graphics?
Case: Akasa SLK
CPU: ?
Cooler: ?
MoBo: ?
RAM: ?
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint 250Gb SP2504C - SATA300, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 9.0 ms, NCQ
Optical: LiteOn 16x DVDRW Dual layer - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=444709

tbh for a work pc Id get one from Dell, they sell v.good 20" monitors. That 20" monitor does not have a proper resolution for a 20" monitor, I would be very wary of that, with TFTs you often get what you pay for.
For 2D work onboard graphics would be fine for a 20" monitor.
I quickly specced up a decent dell system Dimension E521 (D10E15) for £650 with a good 19" TFT, 1GB RAM etc. (20" is a big size for a monitor, it costs alot to get a decent 20" compared to a 19" -)

Another vote for the Dell.
In an office environment, you can't really get much better for the money.

Do you not reckon I could do the same spec for cheaper when building it then?
-
Unlikely, but you can try nonetheless :D Sometimes it turns out cheaper than Dell, most of the time not. How about a Scan pre-built ?

no you couldnt and tbh, why would you want to he will not notice a differnce in hard drives will he, and you gunna spend more mney if you buying hsf for office pcs lol, just use the stock one. but really i would go dell, despite hating them for the laptops they are ok for desktops
