    Mounting case fans

Silly questions i know, but i've never fitted any case fans before so bear with me please!

Righty, so i've bought 2 120mm sharkoon "golf ball" 1000rpm case fans for my akasa mirage. Thing is...which way do you fit them

I assume the one at the front is to bring air in and the one at the rear is the expel air, but i don't know which way to fit them. I guess the one at the rear will have the fan (ie the bit with the sticker on) facing outwards, and the one on the front will have the sticker facing inwards?

Also, what about power? I have an Asus P5B...i plug the fan connector thing into CHA^FAN right? Doesn't that give it power because then there are also 2 (i dont know their name) IDE hard drive/cd-rom power things. Well i can't explain but i'm sure someone has this fan and can explain how to do it

    Thanks in advance
    Chris.

you would think that you would plug the fan in and find out for yourself.

whatever side the wire is on it blows the air out, so if you want it to blow out the back you want the side with the wire attached to the case, and obviusly the other way round for the front. and yes cha fan means chassis fan that will be where you plug it, dunno about the controller, seriously though it takes about 30 seconds to plug a fan in and see what way it blows.

    Hi htid,

    Here's a quick rough n ready answer...

Plug one in and see which way it blows!

Usually the fan blows towards the side with the label on, but if you look closely at most fan housings, there's normally a small arrow printed on them which also indicates which direction the airflow will be. It's not always easy to see as it's just moulded into the plastic surround.

I have to admit I haven't any experience with your particualr fans but a fan's a fan, right?

As to connectors, I'm guessing a bit here, but I would say that the CHAFAN connection will allow the mainboard to adjust fan speed as needed? Or perhaps monitor the fan speed... I dunno really, just guessing but I'm sure you're mainboard handbook will tell you.

Of course, the other option is to just plug them into the molex connectors, (thos CDROM, IDE power thingies), that way the fans will just run, regardless...

    Hope this helps!

(though having said that, it reads a bit like the blind leading the blind... )

Thanks nick! Did just trial and error and got it working. Now the problem is actually mounting it onto the case! The instructions are rubbish and only tell you how to mount the rubber bolts. I've done as it says and i end up with this...

That surely can't be IT! Just putting the rubber bolts loosely through the fan holes and then resting it on them! What are the metal screws for??

    Cheers anyone
    Chris.

i think its assuming you have a grill

    im not sure but
    ..

I think you screw the grill onto the fan using those bigass plastic bolts in the pic here..
And then screw the grill into the case with the fan facing the right way ,..

    I think , not sure

You can use the plastic anti vibration mounts or the screws to mount the fan. One or the other.

    Are you still having problems?

Just used the screws as you said, no vibrations anyway so no need for the anti vibration mounts Cheers amjedm!

You need to pull the rubber mounts through the holes from the inside of the case, so that the "stop" prevents the fan from falling into the case. Better to use the rubber grommits as these prevent vibration unlike the screws. You can't use both.

No worries, good to hear you got it sorted.

If you start silencing the computer (if you can avoid it please do so ) you'll most likely want to use the mounts or another other method.

Actually, i am going for silent, but using the screws has made no difference to noise compared to not even using them - maybe it's slightly noisier at levels the human ear can't pick up, but i can't notice any difference whatsoever
