More like time for AMD to report annual losses... with all their processor lineup prices falling faster than a meteor, the only bit where they can cut losses are shipping them in volume to Dell..

And with 975/965 getting cheaper by the day, why would anyone build new with 939 Opterons?

As for the server front, I guess the 8U servers still have pretty prominent AMD presence. 800 series price drop is a welcomed gesture..
    Me want Ultrabook

mayb people that have low end 939 systems now want a great dual core cpu that overclocks like hell for cheap?

Nice, been waiting for the right moment to upgrade the Opty 146 in the spare PC to a dual core.

An El Cheapo Opty 170 sounds just the deal

For existing 939 users and there is plenty, an £80+ 165 is worth a punt

I was thinking that - or picking up a cheap FX whatever - but then for that price, i might as well just save a bit more and then get a Core 2, as they really do seem to have the performance edge.

Think that i will wait a bit as my opty rig (see on the left) hasnt let me down in any games that have come out recently... but we'll see how much they drop. Just wanted to know, my opty runs at 2.5, does that mean to get comparable performance I would need to get a dual core (Opty or X2) which ran a the frequency too? Or are the dual cores more efficient per clock?

Considering you can pick up a 180 from Scan for under £200 already I don't really see any further price cuts coming, however, as I do have another 939 system just missing a CPU and GPU I might have to pick one up.

To get comparable performance in most games it would need to run at the same 2.5 Ghz, some games are multithreaded which is where the opty will pull ahead. they aren't more efficient per clock, but you can hapily do twice as much without hassling the CPU.

"I've heard there is a common problem with this item from forums" - If you read some forums they believe Elvis was abducted by aliens, doesn't mean it's true.

Yeah thats what i thought - thanks for the reply. I might give it a miss then unless i can get something better than what i have already for a comparative steal. Dont really need dual core i guess really, if i need encoding done, i always batch process overnight... but you never know, i might be tempted depending on the £££
