    Graphics Card for Digital Photography

    is a decent graphics card needed for viewing and minor editing of digital photographs? or will the normal dell standard onboard intel graphics do?

    also what amount of ram is advisable? it needs to run smoothly with a number of photos open, a photo editing package and the internet

    Any card will do really.

    Its the quality of the monitor (and calibration) that will determine how true the colours you see are to the original. Also a DVI connection will be better than VGA if its a flatscreen.

    I'd go for 1GB RAM as a mininum.

    upgrade the screen - this'll have a much bigger impact than the graphics card, which (if running dvi) should have no effect. ram depends a bit on what you're doing - hardcore editing with lots of layers eats resources..

    • oralpain's system
      • Motherboard:
      • DFI "Blood Iron" P35-T2RL
      • CPU:
      • Intel Pentium E2140 @ 400x8 (3.2GHz), 1.375v
      • Memory:
      • Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 CL4 @ 500MHz (DDR 1000), 4-4-4-12-T2, 2.3v
      • Storage:
      • 2x Seagate ST3250410AS
      • Graphics card(s):
      • NVIDIA 8800GTS (G92) 512 @ 783MHz core, 1836MHz shader, 1053Mhz memory, stock cooling 70% fan speed
      • PSU:
      • Seasonic SS-500GB
      • Case:
      • Antec P182, with some small modifications
      • Monitor(s):
      • ASUS VW222U
      • Internet:
      • Time Warner "Road Runner" Cable - 16 megabit downstream, 1 megabit upstream
    On-board should be perfectly sufficent.

    If you were into heavy 2d editing, I might recommend something like a matrox.

    5lab also makes a very good point.
