    Advice on s939 cpu please

Have a 1.8ghz athlon 64 in a nforce 4+x1900xt/2gb ram system, and it NEEDS upgrading.

But I cant decide what processor to upgrade to :/

Single core venice? Dual core with 512kb cache?

    meh

Want something relatively cheap, but dont want something i will need to upgrade again this year.

Grab an X2 their silly cheap now. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=224361 £132 to your door. Not bad. Should hit 2.6ghz without much fuss too.

A 3700+ san diego is half the price, and from the few benchmarks I could find as good in games.

(Mostly playing World of Warcraft, Gothic 3 and the occasional FPS - oh, and I still cant figure out how to make an account on Scan, being from Ireland.)

Half the price and half the cores. Might as well go dual while you're upgrading me thinks.

Now this sounds like a silly question but do these dual core proc's make a HUGE difference? I mean a decent spec single wiht a bit of tweaking can run dam fast and are often a lot cheaper. Is a lower end dual worht the extra cash?

    Smile

You have the graphics and the ram any bottleneck now is the processor.

A x2 4400 will give power and is priced well if you look around, its highly overclockable and has larger L2 cache, computerplanet have them in stock about £160 delivered

    Bluntly, yes.

You can do just the same to a dual core (overclock) so it's gonna be effectively double whichever way you look at it. Plus dual core is the now/future (well, quad core is the future but meh), you'll be kicking yourself if you don't go dual while you have the perfect opportunity.

Quite a few games are starting to get multi-threaded now and it'll clock just as high as a single core(well until you get north of 2.8ghz and start using crazy cooling solutions, which you wont).

The 4400+ is an awesome chip. I wanted one for this machine but nowhere had a single one

its not dual core meaning twice as fast really is it, i have tried a freinds system on his opty 170 at 2.6, and bar the bit where oit can do lots of thnigs i.e multitasking like they are good for, i didint notice any differnce at all from my single core opteron at 2.8. and very few games benefit from dual core at the moment anyway. if you can find a 3700 or an opteron 146 for around 50 then its a great buy.

See thats what I was thinking. Twice the price does not mean twice the performance. Suppose it depends on what you do though

If you're insisting on single core then have a look at this:

i had the same dilemma ended up picking up an fx57 for £125 off of couger onsale section

everyone raves about dual core but the only difference they seem to make is on multitasking ie playing games and downloading illegal x rated movies
i just use my laptop if i wanna download crap and play games on the fx chip

there are games supposedly coming out that will utilise dual core but in about 6 weeks everyone on here is gonna be raving about quad core

whatever you do you will make the wrong choice so buy what you want a decent single core 3700+ or 4000 will certainly do in games but if you have the cash lying about and want to futureproof it for a week or so then get dual core

and if you go single core get a san diego core
