I have an ide hdd which i don't want to have inside the case, but i want to be able to connect it to back stuff up whenever i want. Will this allow me to do that? Assume you just put the hdd inside it, attach it to usb2 and use a supplied ac plug?

I have one, and it works nicely.
One thing to be aware of: The plug from the AC adaptor is a PS/2 plug. If you absent mindely plug that into your PC instead of the Hard drive enclosure you will kill your motherboard. I have made a big warning label that I attach to the end of that plug.
A while back, a frend of mine was ranting about how his dad had killed the laptop he had given him that way.
Heh, yup, don't plug the power adapter into the motherboard - wont do it any good.
The enclosure you picked out will work fine though - I've got the SATA version sitting next to me with a 320gb Seagate drive in it, and its been flawless

This product will do what you want it to do, allow you to connect your hard drive externally to perform backups when necessary.
