GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz, will not run @ 800MHz

I have installed the GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz but it will only run at 5400
667MHz. I've tried changing the volage for the RAM like it says on the RAM to 2V in the BIOS but still no joy.

Can any one give me any ideas, my pc is a Shuttle SN27P2

Does the motherboard have the latest bios release as could be bios related.

Yes mate, sorry forgot to mention that. It has the latest from the shuttle website.

ok that eliminates that one, have you got any other sticks PC6400 or borrow to test ?

Also Have you tryed just the one stick at a time ?

Just out of curiosity whats your system comprise of and whats the rating on your PSU ?

I'm using the same RAM, CPU-Z says its SPD is at 533. So in the BIOS, turn off the memory timings "by SPD" and stick in DDR2-800 yourself. This isn't the same as putting 4-4-4-12 timings, you need to put the correct speed in the BIOS too. And I think mine was rated at 2.1V but I can't remember, but do set the right voltage.

I did post this question on a couple of other threads - I do wonder if this RAM is actually 533 RAM sold as 800 because it's capable of it, and we're overclocking it...

my ram is the geil ddr2800 (the orange stuff) and is rated @ 2.1v, and yes you have to manually enter the voltage, speed and timings, mine did the same when i first booted this pc

That’s right it needs to be set to 2.1V but my shuttle only has an option to go to 2V as max?

Also have entered the timings in manually but still no joy... 4-4-4-12
and selected it at 800. :embarrassed:

I will try and post some pics of the BIOS options soon.... :undecided

Looking at the shuttle site and under my model it details

Memory support
4 x 240 pin slots supports DDR2-800/667 memory modules
max. 2 GB per DIMM up to a total size of 8 GB
Dual Channel memory controller, supports unbuffered RAM

And mine is only running at 667:angst:

you need to change it in the bios, the SPD is set soo low because GeIL and various other manufacturers were having problems with default memory voltages being too low and so they had to default the RAM to a standard of 1.8V and crapy FSB, very confusing for a noobie but I'm afraid it means changing the RAM ration, changing the timings and upping the voltage to at least 2.2V for full stable operation at that speed. Again I have mine at 2.3V and am running 1Ghz on my RAM with 5-5-5-15 timings, and this is apparently easily attainable.

So you'd hope you'd just stick it in and the SPD would take care of it, which is what anyone who doesn't frequent forums and just wants to play would expect...

But that doesn't work, so I have mine running at DDR2-800, 4-4-4-12, 2.1V in the BIOS as it should be. I bought expensive components because I didn't want to overclock (yet), I'm just trying to get everything running comfortably at stock.

But you need to go beyond 800 and 2.1V and overclock it for stability?? :eek: This is nuts...

(I'm not sure this will fix Malice19's problem since his won't even get to 800, never mind stability.)

Hmm thats a shame, I should think the problem is simply that you need 2.1v. I have the same ram. It is pretty odd how they do the spds isn't it? lol.
How about 2.0v at 800 5 5 5 15?

Humm why would you put 5-5-5-15? When it shows on the RAM 4-4-4-12? just asking coz im a bit of a Nov when it come to RAM :mrgreen:

the RAM needs 2.2v for normal operation at 800Mhz 4-4-4-12, the SPD is set soo low because the motherboards would otherwise not be able to boot as it would try that FSB and timings at 1.8V which is the default for all motherboards... Since people were having tobuy some cheapo DDR2 with 533 timings already just to get their board to boot memory makers had to change the SPD so that it would be able to boot and then you can easily put it upto the standard speeds. And with all fairness, memory speeds/timings are not going to make any difference to you if you don't know how to change them...
To answer malice19 the only time that you would want to increase your timings is so attain stability at higher speeds, ala my ram.
