    A64 3500 (Venice) vs Pentium 4 3.06ghz (Northwood) ????

Well my trusty old Pentium 4 has finally gone and died - I was hoping it might make it till next year when I was planning a brand new build with a dual core, vista and a dx10 card but it is gone.

That being said I don't have a lot of cash at the moment so I have managed to get myself a new motherboard (asrock 939 dual sata) and an Athlon 64 3500 (Venice Core) cpu for a really cheap price of around £80 (around $150) from ebay - now these are already bought I am just waiting for a new case to arrive as the mobo doesnt fit in my old case

I am also investing in 2gb of PC3200 ram to replace my old 1gb of PC2100 for the gaming boost - I also already have an agp 7800GS (which dictates the mobo as Im not ready to get rid of that just yet.

Sorry to be so long winded but my question is will I see a performance gain or indeed drop (really worried about the drop) going from the Pentium 4 3.06ghz (Northwood core ) to the Athlon 64 3500 (Venice Core). Will it be comparable or will I have to overclock to see a good gaming performance?

    Thanks a lot

Well personally I believe you will see abit of a performance boost! Your upgrading your ram frequency and AMD 64 single cores can whip Intel's single cores any day of the week. The 3500+ is equavelant to 3.5ghz in AMD platform, where you were only achieving 3ghz before . I'm a bit of a novice being that I've only been into building rigs for just over 1 1/2, but I've been captavated and emersed in learning the ends and outs of building a good quality gaming rig. I believe you will probably see a performance enhancement of about 20% in my estimation.
I can't understand why those of us who know the least, think of themselves to know the most!

I used a 3000+ until a few months ago, the 3500+ be much faster than your P4, and 2 gig RAM is a wise move.

Woah, I thought you were joking at first.

The AMD can probably thrash the Intel two fold.

On the down side, you'll no longer be able to make toast using your computer - AMD 64s run much cooler than those pre C2D Intels!

What power supply for Core 2 Duo 6300 system?

Well I have got hold of some extra cash and I am going to throw caution to the wind and build a new Core 2 duo 6300 system - It is going to have the following

    Core 2 Duo 6300
    Asrock 775 Dual Vsta
    Nvidia 7800GS AGP
    2GB DDR2 PC5400
    250GB SATA HDD
    Creative Audigy 4
    Lian-LI Case with multiple fans
    LG DVDRW
    Belkin Wireless PCI card

My question is I am currently running my set up with a HIPER 480W PSU which runs it all perfectly - now will this PSU be enough for the new machine or do I have to buy a new one?

Thanks a lot for your help

Yes your power supply will be suffient since you are going with AGP interface. BUTTT!!!!!!, why not go for a PCI-express X16 MOBO? Unless you are not a gamer and don't intend on doing much gaming or upgrading in the future. You will not be able to play any games after 2007 and no one is producing any agp VGA cards anymore. Think about it, and PCI-e cards are cheaper as well.Put the money you save on the PCI-e card on a X16 capable MOBO. Don't hender yuor progress, Expand it!
    Love ya' man

The Asrock MOBO is only 4X pci-e capable and not 16X. If you plan on over clocking than may I suggest PC-6400 over PC-5400 because it will bottleneck your performance. If you are not then you are good to go with exception to the MOBO. If you are on a budget then I suggest

if i had a pound for everytime i heard that i'd be rich

interesting fact only 51% of active gamers across the world have switched to pci-e interface

they will still bring cards out as long as that figure stays below about 80% you kill agp you lose half your market we all remeber the announcement no more agp after geforce 6 series and then they bought out 7800gs agp

just like 3 years ago when we all bought 64 bit cpu's as all games were gonna be 64 bit. how is that going bet you can't name 5 games that are 64bit far cry doesn't count because it's a patch for 64bit

So do you think Direct10X cards will support AGP? I'm not so sure. But I guess we will have to see.

the budget is important but i already have the 7800gs from my current build so the asrock dual vsta is required i dont really want to have to upgrade the gpu till next year when dx10 cards are out and i will get a new mobo then as well

Since you only plan on keeping this system for a year I would say go with the PCI-express mobo I indicated and hold out for the Direct10X cards. It seems like such a waste in money to temporarely patch your problem like this. It is totally your decision, I would just hate to see so much money invested for nothing. Don't just get a patch system. If anything get the MOBO you want now and wait for the card. But this is only my opinion. If anyone else reads this thread, please give us your thoughts on the subject.
