    How do you...

Impose password protection on an FTP server?

I've just got a 1TB NAS which will power my lab's FTP server. Its a Thecus N2100 NAS.. that little box Hexus reviewed a while back..

I need to get a password working so only ppl from my research group will be able to access the data archive.

The only option I find on the FTP tab are just whether to enable/disable it, and what sort of encoding it uses.

I've made user accounts, but they only seem to prevent non-registered user from deleting files, and not preventing them from looking at it.

    Any pointers?

EDIT: Also, How do you setup the WINS server settings so the NAS is visible in the network neighbourhood..

I know what our WINS server IP is, just don't know what to put in the bit where its asking Workgroup/Domain..

I've tried several on its own, like specifying Mshome/(Departmental Domain) in the text box, but I cant seem to find it in Mshome workgroup..

The default just gives MYGROUP, which is a little misleading..

Its been a long time since I setup an FTP server........but I still remember most of the theory.

I would assume that you need to revoke ALL the priviledges from the anonymous user account. Then only registered users should be able to do anything, even login.

As for the domain/workgroup box....all you can enter in their is the workgroup or domain name of the network that you want it to be visable in. If it doesn't appear then you are down to troubleshooting why....in my experience, P2P netoworking via MS Workgroups is notoriously hit-and-miss.

Firstly I would recommend sftp rather than ftp, secondly using that it's probably easier to set up public/private key pairs for your users:
