PLease Vote: What would you expect my finding to be?

    LO dudes:

I have an Asus nForce 4 mobo, with an Opteron 146 @ 2500. 4x512 DDR and an X800 XT PE.

If I were to upgrade either the Opteron to an A64 X2 4800+ (2x2.4ghz) OR an X1900 512 DDR card, which would offer me the biggest eye opener for gaming performance?

    I play IL-2 Pacific Fighters, Q4, UT2003, Lineage2 online.

Warning: I have both of these ugrades here, and I've already run the tests!

Which made my mouth water most?

Ooh, you tease! I think it will be the gfx card, as the games you listed i think may be gfx rather than cpu limited.

I would say the x1900 would give the best boost in performance, especially in q4 as there is a setting for 512meg cards. Spill the beans then

I've gone for the X1900 as it's the sensible choice, but me thinks there's a chance you're gonna turn around and shock us...

I swear it was the CPU!!!!

I'm as shocked as you guys, but the X800 XT PE played beautfully once it had all the cpu behind it.

I struggled to see Q4 as any better at all, until I really cranked the res, and my 17" monitor wont go high enough to make it worthy

    IL2 was the biggest shock

NIL increasse in FPS with the X1900. Nil.NOthing. Zero

Put in the X2.....and the fram rate climbed from 35 average on the trcks Iused, to 45! That's a big increase

OK....I could then max the AA andAF on the X1900, but in terms of actual fps increase when the bullets fly.....

    CPU rules!!!

    Shocked? I bloody well am.

I find it hard to believe , you put a slower CPU in and games went faster. I found that dual core made zip all difference to games.

Has IL-2 been developed to take advantage of more than 1 processor by any chance ?

I know a few games have such as Quake etc and if IL-2 has then this might be why the results are as they are

not a huge shock overclocking his old cpu would haveput more stress through his northbridge and depending on his ram if it was not great then overclocking would have dropped his ram read write and bandwidth

Actually, looking at the games being tested I would have gone for the CPU but Zak just went and spilt the beans ebfore I could put my 2 pennies into it. Apart from Q4 (which is optimised for Dual core) the other two aren't that graphically intensive so I would have gone for the CPU.

    ohhh...scathing.

I'll have you know that I am Mr MSCONFIG

I live and breathe by it. So, with the exception of my sound card (uses clock cycles) I'm a very very clean OS man

right now, with firefox open, Task Manager shows 24 processes.

I don't think Il2 can be programmed to use 2 cores...its too old. So I#m as shocked as everyone else. But it is WAY faster and smoother on twin core.,

HOWEVER...... LIneage 2 is crashing a lot with an error for negative delta time, and it's showing on the Lineage 2 site a lot as a problem, so all is not rosy

Oh really? Well that's damn strange, what with the Athlon 64 platform not having a 'Northbridge' n'all Memory controller is on-die...
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
