    Question New Skt 939 Mainboard?

Hi all I currently have a Soltek K8T939Pro Mainboard with the specs seen on the left hand side.

I am looking for a new board which will allow me to upgrade to SLi in the near future and have good overclocking potential for my Athlon 3700+ (San Diego).

I seem to have a lot of issues at the moment trying to overclock on my soltek board (cant oc at all!!) but I hear that the San Diego is a good overclocker. I assume all the other components in my system are good enough for a reasonable OC but my motherboard is lacking in that respect.

I have always liked asus boards and have been looking at the A8N SLis but I have noticed that there are a couple of versions of this board.
If anyone else has any other recommendations then please fire away.

I have around a maximum of £130 to spend and am willing to pay more if needs be.

    Cheers
    Mart

I pretty much certain its the motherboard. Slap me if I'm wrong but I got the general impresion that gigabyte mobos overclock better than asus.

with a 3700+ you've got an 11 multi so you don't need masively high external clock to max the CPU - 270 should be ample.
SCAN have the Abit KN8 SLI which is a solid board capable of over 300 for ~£65 or the AN8 32X for ~£98.

OcUK are having a bit of a clearance of some OEM Asus A8N SLis

My Asus board did me well until I found it wasn't too happy with my new RAM, then I went DFI.

Asus boards are superb in my eyes, even though they don't like certain types of RAM (UCCC IIRC) they made some of the best for S939 and clocked my San Diego up to 2.6Ghz no problems, if you can pick up one of the Asus boards brand new then that'd be great, I really do recommend them.

You can even pick them up second hand for around £40 these days so they really are a bargain.

As to which one to get, if you can find the premium for a decent price go for that as it has the heatpipe cooling for the chipset so is silent, which is always a bonus, it also has more overclocking options (like adjusting the chipset volatge that other Asus boards don't allow) Or Abit boards seem to have a pretty good rep.

I have built 3 computers using 939 boards 1 using an asus a8n e, 1 using a gigabyte k8n board and 1 using the cheap asrock board the only one out of these that cannot overclock is the gigabyte board, i have read of some people that have manged it but i would avoid gigabyte boards again if it is for a system that i want to overclock on.

Asus, DFI or ABIT for overclocking i'd say.

I have an AN8 32X(Sli-d is broke) coming in the next few days, I'll report how it clocks. For £130 i'd recommend that or a DFI SLi-D/DR

For £130 you can have the pick of 939 boards, personally I would go for an epox.

    the AN8 32X is only £98 at Scan ...

The SLi-DR has certainly got more to tweak with but with an 11 multi you can max the CPU before the board & the AN8 32X is quieter & uGuru imo kicks SmartGuardian's arse ...
    I replaced an SLi-DR with an AN8 32X & never regretted it.

Yeah I spotted it on today only earlier and you pretty much just listed all the reasons I had for buying it

I've never even need to go beyond 250fsb(if that), thanks to the mult and my biggest hate, that whiny chipset fan is gone.

Cheers for the help fellow hexusites.
I think I am going to go for the asus a8n-slid 32x or the abit version. They both seem to get some great reviews so ill look around now and see which one I can get for the best price.

Just got my A8N32X Sli installed. Works a treat. Didn't need to reinstall windows either

I'll drop my processor multi later and see how high the FSB will go if you like.

Thanks, It's the non sli version GA-K8N Ultra-9, i built it for my brothers girlfriend, have not tried a bios update but will pass on the advice to my brother and let him deal with it, I only bought it as the asus and abit boards were out of stock at the time and it had good review for overclocking.
