Thread: Max file size for DVDs?

    Max file size for DVDs?

    I've got 12GB of stuff I want to backup onto DVD so used winrar to break them up into 3 4.3GB files but wondered if the was a maximum file size when writing to DVD-r? In which case I could just split each rar up smaller again.

    you will have to use UDF file format though as it the "normal" format doens't like much more than 1GB (I'm guessing this value)

    4.7gb - though in much the same way as Hard Disks are marketed - the actual formatted capacity is less (due to the way it is counted, not a sudden disappearance of space )

    Correct. Normal file system only allows 1GB files.


    Can be a nightmare unless you use some backup software with a "Backup to DVD" feature.

    Lol, I know about the size capacity of the discs, pak understood what I meant (cheers pak) I was asking if there was a file size limitation like for example 4GB in the FAT32 file system.
