e6300 - once overclocked it will eat an AMD dual core for breakfast (and I'm an AMD fan boy )

The intels are as easy to overclock as AMDs are, simple case of upping the FSB

I had a Barton 3200 with 1.5gb of RAM, and I moved to a T2500 in my new laptop (2.0ghz Core Duo) and to say I was impressed understates things

Yeah a Gigabyte DS3 or Asus P5b deluxe Wi-FI AP ... Or go to the max with MAX board. All 3 will get a 3+ overclock easly providing you have some good cooling and fairly decent ram

Conroes are better value than AMD at the moment if you overclock them. But you need fast memory which currently costs an arm and a leg and is poor value.
Also you need a good cooler which costs if you want to overclock.
As for performance can't say I have noticed any difference in games from my A64 at 2.6Ghz, probably cos the graphics card is the limiting factor.
In general use dual core does make a noticeable difference as the PC never seems to get bogged down by multiple applications.

just gotta get the ddr2 ram and all but if you were considering AM2 then it would be the same predicament so...
go for it you'll never look back or so i'm told hehe.

E6300 no contest, but that was a good point about the ram being expensive at the moment

In my opinion, none of the current boards are actually worth what they are selling for, but if i had to choose one, it would be the Asus P5B deluxe Wifi, its not the cheapest, but it is rock solid with shedloads of features and will let you overclock if you decide to.

there are cheaper boards. ASRock make some around the £50 price point, which perform well enough! Especially if you don't mean to overclock.

Main price pain will be the DDR2, and that's probably not going to get cheap again until next year I suppose, but likewise I'm sure I've seen reviews of DDR2 where they found that the super-fast DDR2 made little difference in real-world games and normal app performance over the standard slower stuff.

If you're on a budget don't go wasting money on things like ram that's faster than you need, or motherboards if you don't intend to overclock like a loon. I hear the default cooler that comes with the retail e6300 is perfectly adequate for moderate overclocking, and if you find a half decent cheap mobo that's also adequate for moderate overclocking you have your budget pc

spend the difference on a better gpu (assuming you play graphics-intensive games of course)

cheap ASRock board performing within range of the expensive ones, slower DDR2 not really being a large penalty either. If you want to save money your performance sacrifices needn't be huge it would seem
