Unhappy Just a little bit of advice really....

Hello, I just wanted to get the thoughts of you guys on a build I'm buying for a friend. He has a budget of £1700-1800. Here's what I have so far:

    Scan

    Monitor: 20" Viewsonic VX2025WM £273
    CPU: Core 2 E6600 £210
    Motherboard: Asus P5B-Deluxe WiFi £130
    Case: Antec P180 Black £91
    PSU: 600W Seasonic S12-600 £90
    DVDRW: Pioneer DVR-111 £24
    Cooling: Freezer 7 Pro £17
Sound: OEM X-Fi Extreme Music £55
    HDD: 320Gb Seagate 7200.10 £68

Plus numerous peripherals (mouse, speakers OEM etc.) that come up to about £180

    Total from Scan: £1150

For the RAM I'm going to get him 2Gb of the Adata stuff that won the Labs in CPC for £250.

    How does this look?

This leaves me with about £300-400 to spend on a graphics card, but of course, this presents a problem. Do I stick a 256Mb 7600Gt in there for now and get a G80 when they come out for him? Or do I just put a 7950GX2/X1950XTX in so he can play the latest games at full eye-candy?
I'm leaning towards the latter, but I could do with another set of heads to bang together . Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Karl

x1900xt (when they drop in price) which will allow you to play all things on good settings until DX10 sorts itself out

I would ask though, when spending that sort of money on a PC I would expect a Raptor as a boot drive...

That isnt a bad point, but I read somewhere that drives like the seagate are actually catching upto raptor speeds, is this actually true or am I just spreading blatent unbelievable lies ?

Depends usually with the types of file, but 10k >7.2k RPM - so random access will always be better, as will sustained transfer rates

It'll be when the first DX10 cards come out - ideally you would wait for the second revision of the DX10 cards & arrival of Vista before switching over

Or you could just get an x1950pro for £130 which out-performs the x1900 and is cheaper than the x1900 will ever be (i think ).

You could get an x1950Pro, but as fair as I know they don't outperform a x1900xt(x) which was my suggestion...(I may however, be wrong - I haven't seen any direct comparisons)

And dump the viewsonic, for a similar price (£25 more), you can have a 22" samsung, which, to my eyes looks far better, and you dont have to deal with viewsonic.

As my thread in the ATI forum has been ignored can anyone tell me what would be better; 2xx1950pros in crossfire or 1x1950XTX?

Two X1950Pros... just... but I'd get the XTX. One card and all, plus it's not like it's slow. What resolution would you be running at?

So were thinking get an X1950Pro/X1900XT for now until the 2nd revision of DX10 cards & Vista. Any comparisons on the google net of an X1950Pro against a X1900XT? I can't seem to find anything direct but common sense tells me that a 256Mb X1900XT will beat a X1950Pro, I think .

    Edit: Found one here.

Yeah it does , what model of Samsung is that, and is it available from Scan or another retailer?

Yup you can post links to other review sites, as long as you are not seen as pimping them

Another monitor worth considering is the Samsung 215TW, its around £100 more than your current choice but you get better screen + extra connectivity + Portrait mode + an extra inch. Its what I'm planning to get shortly.

Im currently building a system very close to your spec but im holding out to see how much 8800GTXs are and if they're worth getting becuase i really dont want to spend £350 on a GX2 now only for the 8800GTX to be available right after for a little bit more. Even if i choose not to purchase a 8800GTX when it comes out, it should help bring down the price of other cards which would then save me money or allow me to upgrade another component.
