    A64 3700 X2 3800? or Opty 146? + is Anyone selling

as name states.as i'm so comfused what to get now:S
why and what are the overclocks like and would i really need to overclock a X2 3800 to benefit from my 7900GTO in its max preformance that it can offer?
what overclocks are likely within a range with the 3700 and the x2 3800 as i know what optys are like... what if i bought a new opty is it likely to be rubbish stepping and not oc?
    i just dont know.
anyone selling any of the above and a a8n sli board?

Is the only thing you have RAM at the moment? If so, try and sell it to go for core 2, that will give you the most from your GPU, which rocks.

If you are set firm on the idea of a S939 then I would sugest going for the dual core chip if you canf ind one, may be a couple of them floating around second hand but finding them new may prove to be difficult.

Overcloakcs are never guranteed though, but I would expect a 3700+ to hit around 2.5 - 2.6Ghz and probably something around the region of 2.4Ghz from the X2, you might be lucky and get a chip that is happy at 3Ghz though, it really is luck of the draw.

yeah thats fair enough and im fine with that but would stock 3700 or x2 3800 be good enough for that card?would i really see alot of difference with a core2duo for the price comparision of a x2 setup to a core2... i mean is it really worth banging out that much cause to me its not thats why i want something of preformance within the budget im choosing?

Depends what the budget is to be honest, 939 is dead in the water, so is AM2, if you can go for C2D (which you can for £400 all in not including graphics, monitor, mouse an keyboard, yes, that includes windows) it actually not that bad.

And then when amds 10 core processor hits the street a month later prices will drop even MORE but buy that time the technology will be to old so you will wait for the amd 10 core precessor to go down etc. Thats what I'm doing
    With love and many thanks,

You can keep on waiting until Intel releases the 32 core behemoth and not feel ripped off...

Or... You can pay a fair amount for something sparsely similar and enjoy your PC now with the games you have. Technology will overrun what seems to be available today, and you'll feel ripped off one way or another...

Its up to you, stay in a cave and not upgrade so no hard feelings, or just be a little sober on the term 'value' and just enjoy whats available now..

In regards to your question, this isnt your first day into OC right? You can never guarentee OCability anyways. 3700+ or 3800+ X2 or Opty..they're all the same.. they MIGHT be binned slightly better to be Opty's but binned better doesnt always = better OC. You just need to make up your mind buddy.. I've seen you cracking your head over this for long months before. The more you think about it the more you'll lose out.. or NOT lose out really..

If you're looking for the best value for money in all aspects then this chip is non-existant. Every option now, and in the future will have one silly plop... which is NEWER TECHNOLOGY. And why are you worried that Quad core will make silly rip off if you're never ever going to use 4 cores? Give it a think over breakfast... because this 'waiting' game often leads nowhere..

Waiting for the next big thing to come out will lead you going round in circles. I have a friend who has been waiting 6 years to buy a PC for his studio, but he wont commit because "When the next thing comes out this wont be worth as much" Yet he happily buys a car, which is exactly the same.

The only reason I mentioned C2D was because of the fact you said you were looking for a motherboard as well and it might be prudent for you to pick up most of the stuff now which should hopefully be compatible with Core 2 Quad, if not the motherboard that comes with the £400 price I said was only £65 so its not a real big loss.

3700+ is good overclocker, I'm running mine at 2.75G at 1.4v but I'm sure I can push more. Komplett selling one for 55quid now(which I think is cheap), just for your info. Yeah, that 4000+ looks good. It's so good I ordered one just now for my second puter I personally am not interested in going dualcore on 939 platform, if I want dualcore I'll go for Intel, but most likely I'll pass on this dualcore and go straight for quadcore. But at the moment I don't feel the necessity for going anything other than single core for what I do, to be honest. XP still going strong and I believe I can get another 2 year support for this OS and I think it'll take sometime for Vista to fully replace this OS and take initiative. It's not too late to think about upgrading after that.

please bear in mind that twin core Athlon's have a few issues with UT2003 and stuff based upon similar engines.

Lineage 2 just drops out on a twin core A64. I tried it and went back to my Opty 146

Athlon 4000+ runs on a 12x multi "12 x 200 = 2400" and they are not bad chips, my old 3700+ was happy at 2.6 all day long so I don't see why that shouldn't hit 2.6 as well.

As for 2Gb kits, check the for sale forums, I think BUFF has a 2GB kit of Corsair Low Latency stuff for sale. If you want to check it out head over to the for sale forums.

You could always see if Scan are getting any more of these in though. A long shot but should clock quite well.

Buying a cpu and hoping it to be the golden clocker, is rather like the lucky dip, unless you are buying a proven clocker/stepping. Personally speaking 3 opterons and 4 venice later I finally got lucky
