I suppose the aluminium parts are the ones that make contact with the CPU?

I just bought a Volcano 11+. Will be getting around to putting my PC together today, maybe tomorrow. I've heard a little about lapping a heatsink, can anyone tell me what that is/what it's all about?

    HSF manufacturer R&D:

"...and extensive analysis brings us to the conclusion that the stupider we make heatsinks look, the better they disappate heat! Also, adding two fans to maximise turbulance and increase airflow by 20% makes it SOUND like it's much cooler..."

don't bother lapping your heatsink / cpu - at this stage it's not something worth bothering with. i think building the pc is much more important right now.

i have tried most things (extra holes in pcs, hard drive with a window etc) and lapping the heatsink or cpu is just one of those things i think i'll never actually bother doing. (that's why you got thermal paste, to fill all the tiny imperfections in the heatsink)

that heatsink up top looks AWESOME! I love it

basically lapping the core/bottom of your heatsink with wet/dry sandpaper upto really fine grades to get a totally smooth finish and iron out all the tiny imperfections of the core. then polish it off with some brasso.

I always lap my heatsinks. and put such a tiny amount of thermal paste on and get some good results over not lapping it.

but it is a bit of a perfectionist thing to do. if your heatsink looks perfect then if u dont want to spend the time lapping then dont bother.
