Most monitors have a 40,000 hour lifespan I think. Pretty much should last 4 years at least unless u abuse them.

It depends what fails - there are three main components - the panel itself - with its drive electronics, the backlight and the backlight drive electronics.

I have an Elonex (It is an OEM Mitac) that failed - in fact it was the backlight invertor that had failed. I could have bought a replacement, but in fact it was one component on the board and replacing that fixed the problem. It is on pretty much 24/7 and is over two years old. I have another Elonex that is over 5 years old, and still going strong.

There are sources for replacement backlights, although I suspect fitting them might be tricky. But you can buy a 17" flatscreen for around £100 now - in a couple of years they will be cheaper still.

on a vaguely related note-we have a Hitachi television that was bought in 1975, it has had no repairs and the image is still as crisp as always. it was used by a family of 7 for about 25 years.
on the front it says Hitachi-solid state television

My first TFT monitor which was a monitor/tv combo is still going strong after 6.5 years. Its been used nearly every day for quite a bit of time as well.

Laptop LCDs are probably the ones that have lasted the longest tho ... Even the oldest laptops have TFTs and that should give you an estimation of lifespan before taking into account technological advances in current screen technology.

TFT life is usually quite high. its the backlight that loses brightness and ultimately renders it useless.
