    ASUS GeForce7600GSTOP512 driver issue?

I installed an ASUS GeForce7600GSTOP512 in my system yesterday.

It was packaged with the 8.4.2.1 drivers.

I have a couple of questions.

1 Every time I boot up a task bar message (from the nVidia CP) tells me that SLi is disabled.
I know it's disabled (I only have 1 screen) and I don't want this message to show again. How do I prevent it?

2 I updated the drivers (on recommendation from tech support for a particular game) to 9.3.7.1 after which my USB-TV and any Mpeg video stopped displaying properly, so I rolled back to 8.4.2.1 - I have learnt that the 8.4.*.* drivers can cause overheating problems and I have been advised that the game in question (Caesar IV - don't ask - it's the wife's) doesn't particularly like this driver.........so anyone know a better driver that works properly on this card with Mpeg playback?

    1. I'm not really familiar with the Nvidia CP as I've been on an ATI card for a number of years. However, there must be an option in the Nvidia CP to disable the taskbar, so the best I can suggest is just have a hunt around in the options.

    2. I'd recommend uninstalling all your display drivers and USB TV drivers (using a driver cleaner like Driver Cleaner Pro http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.php), cleaning your registry and then installing everything again. I know it's a pain but it's often far quicker to do this. I'll wager the new drivers will work fine after that. Old drivers hanging around can really do funny things to your system.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!!

Thanks for that idea I'll purge the system of all evidence of any VGA driver ever and start again directly to the 9.3.7.1 driver and see what happens.

I found one way to kill the Nvidia Control Panel is to kill it at start up, to do this load msconfig

Start> Run> Type "msconfig" into the text box and hit enter.

Then click the Startup tab at the top and look for two items in the list called NcMcTray and NvCpl, uncheck the boxes. Click apply then close, it will ask you to restart the system and its up to you if you do, when the system restarts it will tell you that you have modified the start-up procedure (or something tot hat effect) check the box to tell the system that ytou dont want that message again and now you should have rid of the Nvidia control panel in the taskbar.

I've already tried that. It seems XP Pro has got in a bit of a muddle!
I have the only user account on the system and am a member of the Administrator group but for some reason msconfig keeps telling me I need Administrator rights to edit the Start Up processes. I have tried logging off only to find that Administrator itself doesn't seem to be anoption to log in as despite the Account existing when I look in Administrator Tools on the CP....and as a result it defaults to selective start up mode whenever I have a start up item unchecked....

Have you tired booting into safe mode to see what accounts you have on the system? I haven't tried but you may also be able to edit Msconfig from there.
