Computer Restart for No Reason

Hi,

My computer restarts randomly for no reason. My specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.41 GHz
Abit KN8 Ultra (mobo)
1GB RAM
400W PSU
ATI Radeon X1900 256MB
(Please as for more info if u need it)

I have just recently re-formated so no virus's im guessing what could be the problem sorry if there isnt much detail im not a expert on computers.

Random power downs without a BSOD or discernable error are usually power supply related. I wouldn't rule out heat though.

there are 4 things that could cause this they are power supply memory motherboard and processor these are in the order thay are most likly to happen

PSU : Jeantech 400W
Memory : Corsair 512KB X2

The PSU is quite new about 6 days old and the Processor is also fairly new it could be the mobo as thats probs the oldest thing in my comp.

If you're running fairly nice hardware, you might not want to skimp on the PSU so much...Jeantech PSUs are not exactly what most people would call a quality PSU

hehe well thing is i used 2 have a Antec 500W but that broke for other reasons but i wont go in2 it (it wasnt caused by my comp lol) and then i went down PC World and just bought what they had

So the same system was stable with the Antec PSU in it?

No it was doing the same thing as its doing now when it had the Antec PSU in it thats why i think its not a PSU problem

In this case though i agree with the quote above.
Believe me......just because its 400W it doesnt mean its any good.
Its all about AMPS and not WATTS.

Give us the specs from your 12v - 5v & 3.3v rails (on side of the PSU).

I would download a copy of the memtest86 CD and boot up from that, leave it running a memtest for a while. Easy elimination of memory it if passes, best run overnight though.

If you have any bootable Linux CD/DVDs around they may have memtest on them already (yet another reason to always have a copy of Knoppix handy.)

One of the most common causes IME, and the easiest to test for.

My old motherboard used to randomly restart every so often, was because the capacitors on the board were busted. Open your case up and look on the board (with a torch or something), the tops of the caps should be dinted inwards, if any of them are raised or have any kind of discharge then it'll be your board causing it.... altho my board was nearly 3 years old lol, wouldnt expect it with a new one.

It may peak at that but it certainly wouldnt sustain it for very long.

Get yourself a good PSU and im sure your problems will disappear.

Scan have the XCLIO GOODPOWER range at the moment. They are very reasonably priced and offer great power at low cost.
