Seagate 7200.10 320gb sata II hard drives

Unfortunately I have had to return 2 faulty drives as title which I wanted to run in a RAID 0 array. Never got them running so am a little dissapointed. Is it worth giving it another try or swapping to wd caviars / hitachi T7k500's.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Were they both faulty? That's probably a bad sign.

Difficult to say what to do - all I can say is I have one and it's worked flawlessly so far, noticeably quicker than my old IDE Seagates.

yes both were faulty, kept locking my system up before I could even format them. Very noisy too. I dont want to totally discount them as I could just have been unlucky but there are a few forums with a fair amount of problems.
In saying that you only usually hear about bad ones and not the good ones.

That's really strange - i've just bought two of these and they're both quiet and quick...

Perhaps it just wasnt my day. 1 out of the 2 being faulty is unlucky but both is very unlucky. So are they worth another go.
Anyone got the Hitachi 320gb sata II drives in raid ?

It does seem very strange (and worrying from my perspective - must do backup tonight!) especially as the drives carry a five year warranty. Where did you buy them from if I may ask?

Bought them from scan who have been a gem to deal with so far.
There seems to be a few threads on these drives becoming noisy then failing after a month or so, I would certainly keep a backup until the true facts are out. New technology isnt always smooth, maybe this perpendicular technology is having a few teething problems.

I have 2xSeagate 7200.10 320GB drives and they work like a charm, both from Scan.

I'd say check out your RAM, if you are building a new system and both of the drives seem to be faulty then it's more likely that something else is, I had a faulty stick of RAM that messed up formats and installs.

If scan have verified the drives are faulty then I doubt it's anything else.

Highly unusual indeed - maybe the package got dropped somewhere?

Scan has verified they are faulty, they both failed seatools drive tests which is when the penny dropped. One failed on short drive self test but the other passed. Just to check I did an extended drive test and the second failed.
Rough carriage would seem to be most likely cause as they were in one package but I dont know for sure.
Really itching to get a raid 0 set up too.

I have the same drive with no issues.
Nice and fast, really like it. Although ths seeking is a bit noisey (on par with a Maxtor id say), its nothing extreme

Unfortunately scan were out of stock when I called today and it could be up to a fortnight before they are in again. Might wait until then and try again with the seagates. I would have liked to hear from anyone with the hitachi 320gb model though.

my seagate is in a smart drive 2002 which pretty much eliminates any whine but the seeks can just about be heard because the drive is still hard mounted

Quite surprised if it's due to shipping, Scan is always obsessive with bubble wrap. I havent used the 320Gb model of Hitachi but have 4 250Gb HDD and they run fines, for 2 years already

Cant fault the bubble wrap from scan, absolutely loads of it was used but we all know packages fly about vans sometimes. It would be very naive to think packages are treated softly all the time. As I said it could be carriage but dont know for sure. I am not trying to blame anyone it just seems I was very unlucky both were faulty.
