USB Soundcards - Replacement for broken laptop sound

A friend has a broken volume dial on her laptop, sound no longer works on either headphones or speakers. I found this little gadget on ebay:

What do you guys think of it? Or do you know of a more trustworthy brand device?

Pretty much needs to be USB, PCMCIA slot is already taken

That would be ok if quality isn't an issue. Its gonna sound terrible. Then again the cheapest alternative I could find was £60 on scan.

I use one of the creative external sound cards (the mp3+) and it hooks over the lid of the laptop - excellent sound quality. This one or the 24bit external sell on ebay for around £15

Yeah i am concerned about the quality, shes no audiophile but i think it could be an issue...then again it only has to match her current laptop's audio card that could have been crap too

I have one of these and quality is brilliant.

The PCMCIA slot of the laptop in question is already occupied with a wirless card. Thats why i think the only option is USB

Ok so theres 2 options then, just wondering now wether the quality on that box is worth the extra size? I mean this laptop is just going to output to desktop stereo speakers, and the girl is a bit dim so maybe shed prefer the usb stick to the desktop box

u sure there is only 1 pcmcia slot in the laptop, most have 2(looks like 1 but can actually fit 2.
