Dave has the Conroe Itch....

    Budget is £500

I need CPU, 2GB RAM, MOBO

    everything else is sorted

Whats the best Conroe route with this budget?

Overclocking is a must, but I am not into extreme overclocking, so looking for the best bang per buck no brainer overclock.

I would prefer to go with a E6600 unless anybody can tell me its the wrong way to go!

    Cheers, Dave

I personally think the 6600 is the way to go. You can get great results overclocking the 6400 however, but the extra cache on the 6600 makes it worthwhile for me. The 6600 will also overclock sufficiently.

The 6600 is also within budget. Here's what I would do with your £500:

E6300 is easily oc'able with the GA965pDS3, 3.0ghz is the least you'll get

both will come to about £210 so you have another £200 for good spec memory and £40 for a nice hsf. You're left with about 50 then...

I'd but an E6300 thus saving you enough money to get the awesome Abit AW9D max - it's seriously worth it.

I dunno, when I was looking into Core 2 I was going to get the E6400 because I haven't seen the real world performance boost from having the extra cache of the E6600 as of yet, so I thought I'd save the £60 and clock the E6400 higher.

But as you specified you'd prefer the E6600 I'd have to suggest

    Abit AB9 Pro i965 - £102.21
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Socket 775, 2.4 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail - £211.49
    2Gb (2X1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12 - £181.70

Comes in a little over £495 from Scan without delivery, memory should allow you to clock the CPU to run at 3.6 without running past it's stated speed, but I don't need to tell you that.

If you went with the E6300 route then this would be my choice.

That last item is on there for compatability reasons, I don't know if you have heard or not but Core 2 systems run better when used for running a USB Missile Launcher

You can either go E6300 + P5B deluxe wifi + some very fast ram and easily overclock nice and high, or you can go with the E6600 + P5B deluxe wifi + some decent 6400 ram, both should net you a decent overclock and be within budget.

I see Madafwo included a HSF - I assume you need one of these? The Freezer 7 is a good choice or are you planning on water cooling etc ?

why is the abit board awesom >? you use crossfire which is what its designed for but then you cant use the xfi sound card

    pointless imo

Ok, I will try and clarify this a bit more..........

I am not a hardcore overclocker, but love to overclock.

What I love is the stupidly easy overclock like the XP2500@3200

    or the CeleronA 300@450 overclock.

But what I am also looking at is at least one part of the RAM/CPU/mobo combination lasting me to another upgrade.

Looking at all the replies, it seems I am doomed to be split between buying the cheap chip and ramping up the FSB or buying the chip with the higher multiplier and worrying less about memory.

TBH I am more worried abour Mrs Ham reading my email in the morning and finding out I have £500 to spend!

It's just awesome. I've used the asus P5B, the abit ab9, the asus P5W DH, the gigabyte DS3 and DS4 and an Intel bad Axe I and the abit is a superior board than the others...barring the single issue with the PCI slot. Plus the AW9D supports SLI and Crossfire, albeit with hacked drivers for SLI

It all depends on when buyingthings if it will last you an upgrade or two, the RAM should last you for a while as most new platforms are going to be using DDR2 and 6400 should be fast enough for Quad Core (from what I've read they use the same speed FSB as C2D, so it shoudl last you) The question of the motherboard lasting you an upgrade to Quad Core is a different matter, noone is willing to confirm or deny whether their boards are suitable with just a BIOS update or not. The chip would probably be the only thing that you'd upgrade really so I'd say go for the cheapest. That way you can afford the missile launcher, can keep the missus away from you so she can't ask annoying questions about the new hardware.

The mobos which support Quadcore is up on anandtech. Most 965 and 975 would support it. Those from Asus and gigabyte that is.

    Well thanks for the advice.....

I was umming and ahhing about how much money to spend.....

Then the light bulb moment came in the shape of a gingerbread man cutter which my 5 year old had left on the floor....this is not just any old gingerbread cutter, this is razor sharp metal one, sharp side up!

So, following having a gingerbread man shaped cut on my foot, and nearly cutting my toe off, I had to take my anger out on somebody and it was my Mastercard that took it!

Ended up with a E6600, P5B Deluxe, 2x1GB Geil ultra low latency DDR800, and a Scythe Ninja Cooler for good luck.

It took me a tad over budget my hopefully I will be able to make to money at the local freak show as "the man with the gingerbread foot"
