i dont quite know why but for some reason everytime i leave my sn41g2 sitting doing nothin after about 5 minutes it starts to access the hardrive in a constant manor for no reason and it jus seems to keep going until u disturb it by opening another program etc,its driving me mad,i dont mind when its just flashing slowly when doing nothing but it just seems to be constantly on
bring up the task manager Process list and put them in order of CPU usage ... just watch that!

It might be the option for "Allow indexing service to index this disk..." in disk properties, I have a feeling that goes off on a mad one when the systems sits idle.
Also if you have write caching enabled it may just be catching up with work from earlier on.

However, along with the indexing suggestion - it could be system restore having a field day.

When win2k first came out the tick box to disable write caching wasn't remembered and I lost data of a few occasions due to crashes until SP1 fixed it as it hadn't written changes from ealier in the session.
Maybe they fixed something else at the same time associated with that issue that as well.
Anyways after installing 2k I always turn that off now to be sure!
There's also some apps that let the OS defrag the disk when it's idle. Could be something like that

Ive noticed that when i open the CD drive in my shuttle the HD goes mad!

well still havnt sorted it out like,checked system task manager process etc,but theres so many things running which im not sure wot half of it is (quite possibly essential system processes) ive closed down any programs i normally have running and also turned off cache writing on the hardrive but its still there

Are you sure it goes mad? Or does the drive light just come on? Some of my machines HD lights come on when it is trying to read a CD and having a hard time (why the HD light comes on I have no idea).Originally posted by wol

Everybody gets confused with that light. It's not actually an HDD light.
It's an IDE channel light. So, if a drive is using it, it's alight. When a drive is controlling the bus (for example, hogging it while a CD spins up, so that the requested data can be sent wherever,) the light will be on.
I think that answers the CD drive issue, and possibly the first issue too.... perhaps.

Yes, but it doesn't light when the CD-ROM drive is reading or writing, just sometimes the point when it is spinning up, or failing to read it....

Actually it probably is lighting up - but not enough for you to notice. It's the way the data is burst over the channel.

So it is..... I guess before I just assumed that it was reading or writing to the hard-drive at the same time. Learn something new every day...
Kinda mankes it hard to work out when the HD is doing something now though...
