I was thinking a maplin barebones kit with a few extras...
don't forget the OS
dell dimension c521 - sempron 3400+, geforce 6150, 256mb ddr2, xp home w/ vista home basic upgrade, 80gb sata disk, dvd reader, £222.08 inc vat & delivery
Ignoring the OS.
Still that's better than the maplin thing I was looking at!!!
That said, the barebones kit is literally:
£179
AMD Athlon 64 3500
512MB DDR 400MHz
Black ATX Midi Tower 400W PSU
Integrated Nvidia 6100 PCI Express Graphics
Nvidia 6100 Turbo Cache PCI Express
So then he'd need: Monitor (I know of a nice "FLAT" screen one) - Mouse - Keys - DVD writer - hdd.
Run Suse or Ubuntu. Not like it's a gaming machine anyway.
With monitor, but no key/mouse (can be had for £5-10):

But wouldn't recommend that case/psu combo, a bit risky, but for £250 total you don't have much choice.
Directhex, not all of us pay for the OS we use.
Some of us pirate it, and don't try to hide the fact ;)
oh god thats him told straight. i was going to say some people use linux :D
Looks like my barebones has been owned!
Could always tak on £35 for a 350W tagan PSU too. Still not bad value.
*edited by me, I'll keep it on topic.
well it was only braught up beacuse of the insistance that an OS was added to the price.
never mind the fact that if he was going to purchase an OS then he would know which one he was going for. and it wouldnt be nessasairy to include in the build price anyway. i dont see a KB or mouse there either. people decide on these things on there own
Hehe i built my computer for around £250
i was on such a tight budget!
have done lots of improvements since though
Dont talk about piracy or encourage it, even if it is a Microsoft product.
Piracy is lame if you are gonna download something as a trial kinda basis, then buy the the product once youve used it for a while.
Back on topic, Racks list looks pretty good.
