Hi guys, I'm currently running 2 samsung spinpoints in a software RAID0. I was wondering how much of an increase I would see by going to a hardware RAID solution? Also can anybody recommend a cheap card with at least 2 ports on it (preferably more, in case I add more later)? I have found a lot on ebay that use pci-e interface and a silicon images control chip, are these any good?
Silicon Image chips are fine for single drives, but RAID theyre rubbish at (unless under linux, as the software raid supports them afaik..)
If you want a true hardware raid card you're going to spending quite a bit, and there is little point for the minor increase in performance under RAID 0. If you were intending to run RAID5, however, the story would be a little different, and hardware raid would be your best choice :)
As Dave said, if you want a true RAID solution, your looking at big £££.
The best budget RAID cards are done by highpoint, usualy under the 'rocket RAID' family.
They are still part of the software RAID crowd, but they are much better solutions than Silicon Image based boards.
Thanks for the help guys, guess I'll be leaving it then. I was just looking at little things I could do to free up my CPU a little that wouldn't cost much. Things like hardware RAID, sound card etc.
If I were you I would probably overclock your 3000+ a little instead. You get better performance boost from mild overclocking than going for hardware raid. And it'll cost you £0. You have well selected components so there shouldn't be much problem overclockingwise.
Yeah mate I run it at 2.4Ghz 24/7, thanks to burning it in it runs at lower than stock volts. I don't really have a problem with the performance, was just looking to remove a bit of the overhead.Quote:
