Spec me a hard drive! :)

    Hi,

So I might need to get a new hard drive soon.

320GB preferably - a WD 320GB 16MB cache comes out to £74 on Scan - so I'm looking to pay that price (that includes postage etc.)

Needs to be reliable and needs to spin quietly, reading noisyness isn't as much of a problem, but it'd be nice if that was quiet as well.

I currently have a Maxtor, and the noise that produces is fine, so anything quieter or the same as a Maxtor is fine.

    Thanks,
    Craig.

Samsung or Seagate in my opinion. Choose Samsung if a quiet system is preferred or Seagate if performance is key. Either would a good choice though! Seagate drive have a long warranty (5 years I think) but am not sure about Samsung.

Hmmm, yes, I have been recommended a Seagate multiple times now for reliability.

What's the spin (I mainly want quiet spin) and read quietness on them like?

I also see they are 0.4ms faster than WD 320GB

    Cool, sounds good

Think I'll be going for a Seagate then, nobody else has recommended anything else as much as Seagates

What performs better, barracuda or spinpoint?

More recent Spinpoints don't have the same reputation for quietness as the older ones. My SP2004C recently got very noisy! I'd go for Seagate myself if given the choice over again. Used them for 8 years with no issues.

I've got a nice SATA 250gb Samsung SpinPoint - VERY quiet, also has lower temp's than other drives (by quite a high margin in some cases). ATM they only come in sizes of 80-250gb, no larger.

If performance is key, Samsung drives aren't for you. If you prefer temp's and noise, with decent performance, then I'd recommend nothing else. 3 years warranty from what I remember as well.

Well from what I have seen the Samsungs actually have a better access time on them - 8.5ms. Other drives have a 8.9ms access time on them... ?

2 160gb Seagate Barracuda's in a RAID 0 ARRAY would be blistering fast.. although of course a Raptor would beat it.
