The Pioneer A06 is generally regarded as the finest DVD-/+RW drive on the market. 4x DVD-R but only 16x CD-R. It'll set you back about £80.

If you want something a bit faster then there's the LiteOn 8x. 8x DVD-R and 40x CD-R. It's a little more expensive at £120 though, and 8x discs are generally not ultra-reliable.

can you get the liteon with a black bezel?is there anything else midrange between the 2 as i don't really need 8x(although it would be nice)

    The 8X lite-on is only 8X for +
Which is fine for data backup, but possibly not for video that could be played on, say, a mates old DVD player where you would usually choose the - format. I would check CDfreaks forum to see if lite-on have managed to move forward with their drives - compatability before deciding to buy any of their drives.

The teac drives are rebadged pioneer 106's and you can get it in black.
is there anything else midrange between the 2
What do you mean inbetween the 2? The pioneer is the best 4X drive on the market and is dirt cheep. The lite-on drive is still the only real 8X player as plextor price themselves too high.

Edit: This thread requires a link to stonkingly good SVP

You cant keep your existing CD writer for cd's? The lite-on drives arnt bad for cd writing speed either.

PCworld sell the Optowrite drives for £90. Gota be something wrong with them

PCworld do this to get customers in the store. These are the sort of customers who also think that paying £5 per DVD media is acceptable...

    Hence why they do it.

I have a Pioneer 106 and what a great drive, massive media compatibility, as previously mentioned though, only a 16x CDR write speed, I just went out and bought a Liteon 52x CDRW for just over £32, problem solved.
