bought new HD+ext.enclosure, but cant see it

sorry if this is a newbie question

although ive been using computers for recording audio for a long time, ive never done this particular task before:

i just bought a external firewire enclosure (3.5") and a drive (IDE) to put in it.

i installed the drive into the enclosure, plugged it into the machine as well as AC

and when i turned it on, the device installed, but i cant see it anywhere (its not in "my computer") so i cant format the drive.

i tried "add new device" in control panel, but it just sais its installed properly however like i said, i cant see it anywhere...

    thanx

    one more question:

if i want to transfer everything from my existing audio drive (80gig) to my new external drive (160gig) how can i do this without it affecting my project saves?
(cubase songs will not open if the drive path is different in any way)
