Advise on downgrade (server)

I'm dropping my dual 3.0 xeons due to them not being used as much as they could be so I'm looking in to a new box

Both are the same price ($160)

Single Processor Dual Core Pentium D 930 - 3.0GHz - 2 x 2MB cache

or

Single Processor Dual Core Opteron 170 - 2.0GHz - 2 x 1MB cache


Both have 2TB bandwidth, 250 gig sata HDD, 1 GB DDRII 667 ect

Opinions?

the opteron 170 is a socket 939 part. so uses DDR1. make use youv got all the bits worked out right before making a decision

Nah, he is renting a server from somewhere not building it himself.

Technically that is not a downgrade. Single PD930 will be faster than your old Dual Xeon (Except the HT). If you can't even use up the Dual Xeon then there is no point going to a 930/170. Going down to a single core or a slower dual core will be a better choice for you (if those are any cheaper)

You're right it is ddr1

The downgrade is $60 a month less than my dual xeons so it is a downgrade in $$ terms

Performance wise they're about the same. I wouldn't worry too much.

I've ended up going for the pentium because they knocked off the $59 setup fee and upgraded me to the 3.4 for free after abit of sweet talking!
