    Ram Help!

    Hi guys!

Really stuck on what ram to buy for my conroe build....

    Hopefully you can help

    CPU - E6600
    Mobo - Asus p5W deluxe
    PSU - tagan 580W
    Case - Akaska Eclipse
HD - probably 2x320gb and maybe a raptor
Heatsink - probably an artic freezer of some sort

Thing is i realise that theres not much point in buying high/super spec stuff unless your gonna o/c - but ive never overclocked before... How easy is it to do? Id like to overclock, but not to extreme breaking point! So i need ram to suit...

The mobo supports 800mhz ram i believe and I was probably going for corsair as Ive read good things about them.

    Would this be an overkill?

    Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) - £229 @ oc/uk (cant link to url!)

Also - i dont fully understand ram timings, but was under the impression that the lower the numbers the better..

Budget is going to be about £1K - gfx is undecided yet, not sure whether to buy a cheaper one now and wait till the DX10 cards come out, or spend for a good one now

    Any help would be appreciated

    1) Overclocking is easy I'd never done it before and I have E6600 and that same ram you're looking at and it's so stupidly simple i'm sure even a chimp could do it. You overclock by changing the fsb on the mobo. fsb x multiplier on the cpu = your ghz.

E6600 has 9x multi so 335 x 9 = around 3ghz. Im not sure about that mobo, but for my p5b you need to double the fsb number for your ram clock speed. So at 335 your ram clock will need to be 670. Considering that ram is 800mhz you'd be fine. Depends how far you want to oc.

    2) Lower latency is better, you're right.

    3) oc/uk are rip off merchants apparently Scan have it here for £210

    4) DX10 cards are already out, it depends weather or not you are desperate to have dx10 now (considering no games currently support it) or if you want to wait until the next gen of dx10 cards come out which may be less power hungry and more stable.

    Hope that's useful!
    Chris.

    dx10 is already out mate about £330 for a 8800gts or £400+ for 880gtx

that dominator memory is pretty good stuff although look at the prices on the geil ultra stuff its pretty fast and i got 2gb on sale at oc/uk last week for £165 cas4

    Cheers guys for the info!

RE - the DX10 cards - £300-£400 is a bit above my budget! But i think with the P5W It has 2x PCI 16x slots, so this is compatible with the DX10 for the future?

Also i spent weeks deciding between the P5b and the P5W - and eventually found out that apparentlyt he P5B was better for 6300/6400 and the P5W was better for the 6600!

Thanks Chris for the info on overclocking - still quite daunting - id like to o/c but not so much as to risk breaking anything ( i.e. voltage settings?)

Sooo - to overclock - i just up the FSB slightly until it decides not to boot, the back off down a bit? And aim for about 3ghz i think as thats apparently what the 6600's can hit?

The FSB i just mentioned - this is the CPU fsb? You also mentioned a ram FSB? Or are these the same things :S - i take it you double it because its DDR2?

Oh i should mention - the PC will be used mainly for virtual PC's (want to setup a virtual server+clients) and a fair amount of gaming, not a huge amount, but id like to be able to play HL2 at top spec, and be ready for HL3

About the dx10 cards, as long as you have 1 PCIe x16 you can get a dx10 card in the future. Since you have 2, you'll be fine. Since dx10 just came out only the top range cards are available atm but the mid range ones should be out sometimes next year, so you could buy a cheap dx9 card for now and then get a mid range dx10 next year. Don't know how much you want to spend on the dx9 card atm though!

About the P5B and P5W, well the P5W is a lot more expensive, and you can still easily get 3.2ghz on a P5B, so it's up to you if you think the P5W is worth it, and if you really want to overclock past 3.2 and want the extra features.

As for overclocking, i'm not an expert, but yeah you just up the cpu fsb in the bios and then if it won't boot, you lower the fsb. I don't know about why you double the fsb to get the clock speed of the ram, I was just told you do, and so I did it

I too was worried about the voltage settings, but some people get 3ghz on the stock volts. If you leave the vcore temp to Auto in the bios, the mobo auto ups the voltage to what it thinks it should be. You can try leaving it at stock volts and then upping the fsb to see if it boots, meaning you wouldn't damage the parts

Hope that clears things up a bit more, need any more info just ask!

Thanks for the info! Seems ill be future proofed for DX10 then Budget wise for gfx, id be looking at about £150-£200

Ive found the P5B and P5W for about £15 difference, so still not sure yet. Also i discovered the P5W can support 1066 FSB for the ram - so i could order PC8500? or again this could be overkill :S

Thanks for the overclocking info - i think ill leave the voltages at stock level and fiddle with the FSB!

    Cheers

Well even if P5W can support 1066mhz ram, (it's clock speed for ram, not fsb ) That means you would need a cpu fsb of 533 x 9 = 4.8ghz. You ain't getting 4.8ghz on stock volts So i reckon it's overkill.

I dont know what other feature differences there are between the P5B and the P5W though, and also don't know which versions of each board you are looking at. If you think the difference of 15 quid is worth it, go for it, if you can afford

Ahh ok thanks i understand I will leave the 1066 clockspeed ram and go for the 6400 Corsair XMS Detonator one (the extra detonator bit seems to not be much more then the normal corsair?).

Ill have a think a bit more about the P5B and the P5W - i know the P5B is newer with its 965 chipset. Id also heard that the P5W had "actual" crossfire? Oh and the P5B doesnt have 2x PCI 16x apparently?

Ive gone backwards and forwards so many times with those to motherboards

Lol if you're happy with the P5W go for it. I'm not much of an expert with mobos so I don't really know any of the benefits of the P5W. Sorry I can't help with that.

Nah im still not sure matey - very confused with the mobos also seen that the nvidia chipsets are out now!

Thanks v much for your advice/help though - much appreciated

The P5B is a great board, and I prefer it to the P5Wdh, but if you really need the crossfire, then go for the P5w. Unless you want to be a guinnea pig for nvidia, avoid their sli board for now. The P5B is rock solid and a great overclocker.

I've just built E6600 with 2GB Corsair PC6400 XMS Twin on a P5W DH Deluxe.

The board auto detects the hardware at first post and then asks you to adjust.

You will need to falsh the BIOS before most functionality is available. After that simply set the FSB to suit the DDR2 800,....abd you are away.

Goes like stink, and the board happily overclocks to about 30% with no other tweaking.

Found it to be really stable, other than a bit of a moment with the intel raid drivers, which needed to bve slipstreamed into windows as the floppy method wouldn't work. (likely my bad)
