Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz Upgrade (Worthwhile > AMD 4000+) ?

Would it be a worthwhile upgrade? I'm looking for systemwide performance increase....in terms of media playback, OS use and games...I currently have an AMD 4000+ so would a 1.86 core2 be significantly better?

Depends on the rest of your system and what your using it for, I'm just about to go from an x2 4400 to an E6400....

A stock E6300 performs on a par with an X2 4400+ from my reading (this is in games, although I expect they will be similar in performance for other things). In terms of whether to upgrade, I personally wouldn't and would wait for a little while for things to settle down and possibly see what AMD come up with. However, there is a definite bonus in getting an E6300 for the sheer overclockability of the chip.

Well you'll notice a big jump in smoothness outside of games just for going to dual core - everything will seem really fast, it's great!

For 'feel' factor, I'd say yes, it's worth it.

To go from a AMD 4000+ to a core2 would mean new motherboard, probably new ram etc.

It would be a definate improvement, but you would end up with a better system overall by just replacing the CPU with a dual core model, and putting the spare money into more ram/faster graphics atc.

If you are looking at a complete new system, then core2 is the way to go. But the 4000+ is no slouch, so the cost is probably not worth it for the relatively marginal improvement.

i went from fx57 to e6400 and overclocked it to 2.6 and its alot faster and smoother than the fx was

although it was a pain in the ass changing board and ram

I would go for it, I have a E6600 and a Opteron 170@ 2.8GHz the E6600 eats it for breakfast, it so quick it's unreal.
