In my Asus P5B Deluxe mobo manual, I read: "You must install ...Windows(R) XP Service Pack 1 before using Serial ATA hard disk drives."
I'm not sure my Windows XP installation disk has SP1 on it. How can I install SP1 to my SATA hard drive if I do not have SP1 installed already?
You can integrate SP1 into the windows installation CD and burn it on a CDr... Or you can download a Windows CD (from p2p) that has already been updated :)
Not sure how illegal that would be... as long as you use your real Windows key and activate normally I think its ok...
What are you trying to do ? Windows with out SP will recognise SATA HD as long as you provide the driver through floppy if you want to install Windows on it.

When you say "... driver through floppy ...", what exactly do you mean (I am not so terribly sophisticated computer-lingo-wise)?
I found this at the Seagate site:
"Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 operating systems, or higher, are required to support ATA disc drives larger than 137GB. The registry setting EnableBigLBA needs to be set after the proper level service pack is installed."
My guess is that the SATA drive will work fine and then better after you installed SP1. But that is a tuess, not even an intelligent one.
If you have another pc....put the asus driver cd in the cd/dvd drive and a blank floppy in the floppy drive and then boot from the cd, it will then take you to a utility to make a sata driver and it will save it to the blank floppy disk in the drive. Then, take out the asus cd, replace it with your windows cd and boot from the windows cd, it will ask you if you require any third party drivers and to hit F6, hit that and point it towards the floppy drive and it will install the sata drivers for the motherboard and you are good to go then.
alternatively, use nlite to slipstream service pack 2 into your version of windows, much easier in the long run.
Okay, you are right Clunk -- nlite sounds better (although I have only glanced at it at the net). Esp. as I assume that the otehr alternative requires a floppy drive at the new computer, something I will not have. (Although I am not sure what "and you are good to go then." would have entailed. :-)
just meant that once you had completed all the steps i mentioned, you are well on the way to installing windows on your new pc :)
Not so sure about that, Clunk. I did not know what I was supposed to do with the floppy in the end. But, I will try nlite first.
