    Laptop suppliers?

Can anyone recommend a few places that do well priced, well specced laptops, and have good customer service?

Im looking for a laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor, minimum of 1gb ram (single stick so i can put another in) and if possible, a 17" screen and 80gb minimum hard drive. I dont need gaming graphics and dont need any fancy sound or extra software, just XP home.

Been looking at Dell and theres an Inspiron that almost fits the bill, but its got a 15.4" screen. Theres another Dell with a 17" screen, but the rest of it is a bit overkill for what i need.

So, anyone point me at some decent retailers then please?

    ta.

Other people who make laptops - RockDirect possibly?

Re Inspiron 6400 (I'm guessing that is what you are looking at) just upgrade to the higher resolution panel, that way you get a higher resolution without any corresponding increase in size/weight. Otherwise a Latitude D600 should have the 17" Screen.

I have an acer which meets those kind of things (though with a better gfx) had to send it in when the tv tuner went balls-up and the customer service seemed pretty alright. Had a quick look at the acer website and a number of their lappies seem to fit the bill.

    Thanks Dave,

Theres an Inspiron 6400, I cant see a Latitude 6400. One of the Inspiron 6400 ones works out pretty good with a 1920x1200 17" screen and 2gb ram (for the price of 1gb).

    Ill keep looking cheers

Sorry Clunk, my mistake. The Latitude D820 has a screen with the 1920x1200 resolution, but is still a 15.4" Widescreen panel. Not sure how that affects what you want from it, but it comes out about the same price as the Inspiron 6400 depending on options.

Not to put you off Dell's but...

I work for a small startup company that bought 5 Dell laptops about 2 years ago. 3 out of 5 of them started to develop problems exactly 1 year after buying them. Interestingly (or is it conveniently?), the warranty was also only 1 year... hmmm I wouldn't put it past them to engineer such random failures lol. Especially considering they have a custom Dell BIOS and custom Dell parts.

But having said that, all the problems we had weren't catastrophic, so we're still actually using them today.

Thanks...I already have a Dell, and I have to say that it has been worth its weight in gold, which is a lot of gold but i need something with a bit more grunt now, so im looking out for some good deals....it doesnt have to be dell, but they seem to be far ahead price wise for a core 2 duo lappy.
