Memories - if only I could remember...

I'm following the mainstream advice and am going to build a core duo E6600 system on the recently reviewed eVGA nForce 680i SLI LGA775 motherboard.

Can someone point me to a good memory solution giving me reasonable (not all out) overclocking headroom? (1-2 gig)

Also what case/power supply combination would suffice (looks unimportant)?

A power supply is very important, do not just go for a in-case one - spend at least £50-70 on a decent one.

Hello guys. I was going to make a post on this subject as well until i saw yours Pete.

I have same questions - Getting E6600 core duo/P5B mobo this weekend and trying to decide on what RAM to get from scan when i place my order.

From reading alot from what people have said DDR2 6400 memory will be fine for a Core Duo slight overclock - hope this is still the case? As i want to use it for gaming im going to have to go for 2GB worth despite the current high prices.


Im trying to decide between.....

For an E6600, 6400 ram will give you an overclock of 3.6ghz without overclocking the ram at all, that is 1:1. The chances of the E6600 getting there without needing a large chunk of voltage are quite low, so either of the sets of ram you mentioned will be fine, or you could get some cheaper 6400 ram and invest in better cpu cooling maybe.

yes you should always try to spend as much as you can afford on a PSU upto around £100 (my enermax was £105 or something like that) You also need to look for a good sized case with good cooling.
For memory you should be looking at some GSkill if you want overclocking headroom, these have been known to get way beyond spec (the PC2-6400 HZ series are getting around 1200Mhz at 2.4v - with active cooling, but 1000mhz on 2.2v without active cooling is frequently attainable).

cheers for your help again - ordering the final parts this weekend so going to assemble it all on my week off.... next week :-)

Im getting the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro for the cpu but think i will still go for the good corsair 6400 ram anyway and as only £8 more ill go for the dominator pair anyway.

In order to get the 3.6Ghz how much do i have to adjust it by on a P5B/E6600 combo? tbh anything near 3ghz is fine for me (considering i will be using arctic air cooling anyway and not water) Any tips on that appreciated and with luck ill be looking at a pc slightly faster than my current old P4 2.4 northwood 512m ram/AGP set up no wonder games running so slow on it nowdays

P.S: Goku i like the gskill ram but i really want to order my stuff from scan and they dont have that RAM, and i have bad memories ages ago off using places like o'clockers (cringe)

You cant really go wrong with either of those sets of ram mate. 3ghz should be easy enough, but first get it built up and 100% stable at stock settings before you tinker with it

3.6Ghz on mine is doable but requires a hell of alot of volts, 3.2Ghz however is doable with pretty much default voltage. However, id run everything at default (still fast as hell) for a few days to let it settle and to make sure its 100% a ok. If you can get 3.2 out or your chip (id be amazed if it didnt) it screams along, takes and amd chip outside and beats it with a very large stick. I'm running my chip at 8x400 which gives me 3.2Ghz with the ram running at full whack, 9x356 will give you 3.2Ghz aswell without the ram even having to break a sweat (these are with 1:1 ratios mind).

Actually, I did not mean shop but, you can easily compare as he tests the same way each time. And, I try to buy online and leave the shopping to the wife. I hate crowds of mesmerized people stumbling around with $o$ in their eyes.
