If I were to purchase a Dell how difficult do they make it to upgrade the system later, ie if I wanted to purchase a DX10 card when they came down in price. Are they as terrible as people say they are?

you can upgrade everything but the motherboard and psu are upgradeable but it depends on what model you want
Ok, what about a dimension 9200 or a XPS700.
It depends on the system, but the main issue is the PSU and case - they use many non standard ones.
This can make upgrading the mobo hassle if the case isnt to the ATX standard.
The PSU is the main issue though - a DX10 card will require a decent PSU. Now, the PSU's Dell uses are fine for the systems they ship in, but when you start adding in powerful cards, issues often happen. I doubt the PSU will even have a 6pin PCI-e power lead that will be needed (ok, you can buy an adaptor, but most PSU's today have one as standard and are designed with the g.card load in mind).
Just self build !
