Replacement HDD recommendation

Currently have a 160GB Western Digital drive in a Dell Dimension 3100 and its on its last legs due to no cooling in the case etc..

Can anyone recommend a 160GB replacement drive, the cooler the better due the dells lack of air passthrough?

Seagate 7200.10s run reasonably quiet & cool, Samsungs certainly run quiet, not sure on the heat side of things though - mines cooled with a 120mm fan and doesn't get hotter than 26C

My 200gig seagate runs pretty cool and quiet. I have it in a passively cooled case with no fans at all. No problems so far

It's mounted in a 5.5" bay with a set of these:

with nothing above it and only a (rarely used) DVD-RW below it.

It gets warm, but not hot

if your looking for cool, then id second a vote for a samsung HDD, had 3 in the past, barely noticable noise wise, and never had any problems with them over heating

That caddy will take a 5.5" drive bay, same width depth and length as the DVD drive in the case as well. If you think you have room for another one of them then the drive will work in a case too.

Seagate, alot of people recommended a Seagate to me when I was after a new drive. Haven't got it yet, but hopefully getting a 500GB Seagate for Christmas

Personally, I'd currently go for a Seagate, especially since the 7200.10s are reportedly a marked improvement over the last generation.

Yup, avoid the .9 and look for the .10 - they are a marked improvement (according to the benchmarks anyhow..)

I used to buy Western Digital drives. I now buy and recommend Samsung, they are quiet and reliable. Scan have a Samsung 160Gb in stock for forty notes. Can't go wrong with a Samsung or Seagate mate.

Have 3 x Samsung drives and they are quiet, fast and keep very cool

Never had any problems with them either - £49 for 250GB as well
