I'm not an overclocker, but have just installed motherboard monitor and it's telling me that the CPU temp is 81C
Would I be right in thinking that this is a little high??
System is a sony with Asus Motherboard and AMD +2400 chip (1.99GHz actual)

lol if it is 81.c it will die soon
what does the bios say?
Thats probably not right as you'd be getting crashing at that temp : you probably wouldnt even get into windows.
The chips are only rated to 80/90 deg. (depending on type). Check it in the BIOS before you get into windows :)
checked the BIOS the other day and it was 61 - but then it would be cooler on boot-up anyway wouldn't it?
Yup, it will be much higher underload.
Thats too high then, what HSF is it ?
Try reseating it with a new coat of thermal compound ! :)
HSF?
Dave changed the Heatsink and Fan - but there was no change to the BIOS readings
HSF = Heatsink and fan
Tried any arctic silver thermal paste? Is the fan on the heatsink running the correct direction? Maybe a dodgy thermal sensor?
What sort of airflow is there in your case? what temps do you get if you run the system with the side of the case off? Also is the heatsink hot to the touch?
Booted up this morning, CPU temp was 80 as soon as it got to Windows - prob lem with sensor maybe?
Airflow seems ok - case temp is logged at 25 once I'm in Windows rising to 35. With the sides off I'm getting case temp of 32.
Fan is spinning so that it's forcing air onto the heatsink (I'm guessing that this is the right way?)
What type of core is the xp2400? my friend had a palomino xp2400, with was 70's, so that could explain it....
Also do u have the rubber/plastic thermal interface pad on the HSF? as u want to replace this with proper thermal compound.
Will
How would I find out what core it's got?
The HSF we replaced had thermal paste on it.
The new HSF was straight out of an AMD box.
Cheers for the help everyone
Is the HSF good enuf for a CPU of that rating?
The new one came out of a retail box from AMD that had the 64bit version of the chip in. The old one was OEM and was twice the size, but I'm guessing that doesn't mean anything due to different materials/fan speeds the like.
i had a similar problem with motherboard monitor when i installed the latest version.
When I went to the high/low section it reported that the CPU was at 72c. I knew this wasn't right since the heatsink wasn't hot to touch. Each of MBM's sensors is set by the user. I was given the option of sensor1 or sensor1-diode. This was for the CPU, system and PSU. I found that setting the CPU sensor to use the diode gave the correct temp. Using the standard ones for the other two seemed fine.
Try go into the temperatures section and adjust the sensor the CPU is using.
hope this helps.
I found a sensor that said the temperature was 56C - cheers quarryman.
How likely is it that this is the right sensor?
I'd say this is the correct temperature. the best way to make sure is to take note of it and then reboot quick and enter the BIOS. It should be in there. This is also a good way of figuring out which sensor corresponds to which temp.
As a rule go by what the BIOS says above anything else. When I fiddled around with some of MBMs other temp sensors i was getting some minus readings! Its not that cold in my room. :)
