    Remote/Mouse/Keyboard for Mediaportal/XP Home

I don't have an IR receiver, but I have an Xbox 360 HD-DVD remote. I am not sure how good that remote would be at controlling a media pc. It looks like I will have to buy a new remote and IR receiver together...

I really like the look of this one... but I am not sure it will play nicely with media portal in XP as its designed for Vista MCE..

Would it be a safer bet to get this?

[Also on a side note, does media portal index video files on a NAS in its database thingy? (I am talking about the thing used to browse DVDs, MKVs and AVIs stored on hard drives)]
[Edit: and what's the best keyboard/mouse solution? I like the Logitech diNovo Mini but refuse to spend that much on a keyboard/mouse... is the MCE keyboard any good?]

Awesome so it can be done... I think there is a work around where you don't need a XP receiver... I might be misunderstanding that thread though...

Is it a "Vista" MCE remote though? Because they don't have official drivers for XP afaik

    Re: Remote for Mediaportal/XP Home

Scan had the answer all along!
    Question / Problem
Will this remote control work on MCE2005 as well as Vista?

    Answer / Solution
This remote control will work with MCE2005 via the original MCE remote's receiver. There are no drivers for the supplied receiver to work with MCE2005 so you need the original remote's receiver. I have read that the drivers for the receiver are built in to Vista and it works with the supplied receiver. Vista = use supplied receiver. MCE2005 = need the receiver that came with the original remote.
So I just need an IR receiver compatible with XP, then I can use the nice remote

I will ask in the scan forum if the one that comes with this will work

Regarding the keyboard, I am now thinking, do I really need one?

Once its set up surely the remote can do everything?

Having access to a keyboard is really useful, though.
Many of my friends have a media PC of sorts, and being able to fire up youtube and search for videos, google for answers to questions, is vital.

If the remote gives you access to keyboard character input, then all is good, but it may be more difficult to use than a real keyboard.

    I suppose you are right...

What do you guys think about this one?

Has anyone tried Keysonic stuff? What's the build quality like?

i've got the version that i linked to and it's quite adept at handling things, although on mine you do need a clear line of sight (it's not blutooth) but it still handles things well and is solidly made.

    Re: Remote for Mediaportal/XP Home

You can't go wrong with the KeySonic's in my opinion, have one similar to the one you've chosen Sim in brushed aluminium, Scan don't seem to have that one though.

Also note, I presume you will need a Bluetooth dongle, as I don't think that Keyboard comes with one.
Hence the reason for going with the wireless infrared solution myself. However, I might be wrong, so don't quote me!
