    What Core 2 Duo motherboard?

Hello, I've searched various threads and there was no dedicated one I could find recently.

    Anyway, basically I had a £250 budget for a CPU/Motherboard/RAM.

    I've already bought:

    E6600 Retail - £155
    Corsair XMS2 2GB Kit - £105

    This totals £260 already....

Anyway, I have around £0-£80 for a new motherboard. I may try overclocking for the first time.

    Anyway, has anyone any ideas?

I know that the new 680i has just come out so may this lower prices?

Also, nForce4 is old now is it not?

    avoid nforce4.

What ram did you get? 105 seems cheap for 2 gig of corsair, but that will also be the deciding factor in your overclock.

The p5b deluxe is a great board, around 130 ish, that leaves you enough for an e6300. If you dont overclock, you could go with a lesser board and a better cpu.

    Hello, it was this stuff:

    CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 -

    http://scan.co.uk/Products/ProductIn...oductID=402849

It was second hand, but obviously working etc...

I have already bought an E6600 so I only have around £80 (tops, I would prefer less) for the new motherboard.

What nForce should I get? Is the 680i, that much better?

Looks like you got an excellent bargain on the ram then

    nforce4 + intel = crap/problems/not great overclocks etc.

how come it has to be nforce? are you going sli or something? the 680i boards are way overpriced at the minute. You could always look for a used board and save a few quid that way.

If you want a cheap & Cheerful MB that is reasonably over-clockable then checkout the Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 is is very good value and well worths considering on a tight budges, otherwise if the ASUS P5B Deluxe to the current best board at not silly money.

680i are all silly money for most people, but if the ASUS P5B is too much, then the Abit AB9 would be a great choice.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

    Hi, thanks for the replies.

I've no real idea to be honest clunk, I was under the impression that nForce4 was the only one I could buy other than the 680i...

The asus P5B is Nforce5 then? I think I'm getting confused with all this Nforce business even though I have no idea what its about.

Will I really see that much difference on a top of the range motherboard? The 6600 already has 2.4ghz and so to get to 3ghz I only need to overclock it a tad.

Without overclocking, are all motherboards basically the same?

p5b is intel 965 chipset, no sli (but thats no real loss), they do overclock very well and have plenty of features. There are plenty of board that will be rock solid at stock speeds, but dont overclock too well, the Asrock boards are like that if i remember rightly

If you just want a board that works, isn't fancy, and you've no intention of overclocking (not really necessary, as the speed's great out of the box anyway), then consider the Asrock CONROEXFIRE-ESATA2: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=443861

Seems a cracking little board for the price.

Actually the ASRock boards themselves overclock pretty well, they just can't supply extra voltage to the CPU (without modding), so you will only get the 20-40% overclock that's possible without raising voltage.

But they are very solid for the price especially if you're running at stock.

So, as they cant supply the voltage themselves, they dont overclock very well, especially considering that quite a lot of the conroe chips need a good bump in voltage to hit 3ghz, that was the point i was trying to make

Thats what I was thinking a 6600 for only £155 is a bargain, unless it was a typo, but I doubt it.

Gigabyte S3 965 overclocks pretty well. ATM with the budget you have forget it. Abits 680i is being released January at £162 thats the cheapest atm.
Gigabyte S3 is a budget board but dont let that put you off.

£81 pounds fits in your budget nicely.

    Hi, thanks for the replies.

Yes, I did pick up the CPU up for £155 + £5 postage off Ebay.
    It is brand new.
There were a few floating around, one was £160 (same seller) and was around for around 12 hours which surprised me.
Just make the search in your favorites and put it as newly listed and then you pick up some bargains.

What is the difference between the S3 965 and S3 945?

    Thanks.

Is this not a good price for the P5b?:

    http://www.digitalkind.co.uk/INU_Pro...P?ref=88814505

Is this alot worse than the deluxe edition?
