Which way to go? - HTPC/Gaming?

It’s decision time; I’m planning either a new HTPC, or Gaming PC build, or both.

If I build a new gaming PC I can use elements of the existing one for an HTPC (2GB Ram, 4400 X2 (939), maybe the Asus A8N32 Motherboard (as it’s passive), probably not the 7800 GTX, as this’d be a bit overkill)

If I build a new HTPC, I’d buy all the stuff new (probably Conroe based), and a new Gaming PC would have to wait

Both options would result in me selling my current HTPC (Aopen EA65-II, P4 3.0GHz, 1GB Ram)

If you had a grand burning a hole in your pocket (at this point I must emphasise that I don’t - yet), what would you do?

(PS - Just wondered how the Asrock CONROE 945G DVI compared to other HTPC-esque motherboards (if any super fast people have seen or used them yet!))

I'd go for both, because as you quite rightly said you can build a new HTPC from your old kit. And when your new gaming rig gets too old you can build a new HTPC from that.....

For a grand you can get a pretty decent new rig and have enough over to get any other bits you'll need for your new HTPC.

Built a core 2 duo based SFF PC with one a while ago. Highly recommended.

Upgrade the PC and lob one of those new Radeons x1600 with HDMI etc in.

They seem perfect for a HTPC.

Yes, as everyone else says spend the cash on gaming kit and build the HTPC out of the spares - buying an ultra low-power and cool CPU etc for a HTPC won't make so much difference in real terms compared to normal gear, but top kit on your gaming rig will make all the difference in the world

Thanks for the advice all - yes it certainly appears that it's leaning that way.

Out of interest - does any one know any 939 motherboards with decent onboard sound, and (poss) decent onboard graphics, that would be conducive to an HTPC?

And any general advice on a new conroe system (CPU, Motherboard, GPU, RAM - good oc'ing) would be appreciated, as I've not been keeping abreast of 'intel issues' (i.e. mainly things to avoid! ).
