    SATA DVD drives

    My Yamaha cd writer has started making some strange noises (well stranger), so it may time to splash out...

    I've been reading about issues of not been able to boot from a SATA DVD drive, anyone here got any experience of these?

    My M/B is an Asus A8N32-sli.

    I have a samsung sata DVD rewriter and can boot from it with no problems.

    No mine was the older LN13548 SSUNG DVDRW SATA Z16 W163ABEBN bought in August and its been excellent.

    Bit of a long shot: From what I see your drive is connected via the nForce 5 chip. Don't suppose you have had your drive connected to a nForce 4 M/B or Silicon Image 3132 SATA controller and booted from it?

    No this was a new build directly on the nforce 5 chipset.

    nForce 4 should be OK too, as it has native SATA support built in. I think the A8N32-SLI board above is nForce 4 too.
