    RAM speeds

I'm a bit confused (in more ways than one before anyone else says it ) about ram speeds. My ram chips say that they are 400 mhz but cpuz says they're 200mhz (well... 240 as they're overclocked). Is this because they are dual channel? If so am I making a mistake overclocking them as the motherboard only supports 400mhz and I would be running it at 480? Thanks
    With love and many thanks,

cpu-z says 200 mhz because... well DDR works on both the rising and fallign edges of the clock, rather just on the rising so 'double' the amoutn of data can be transfered per clock.

so if its running at 240MHZ the ram will be running at 480 MHZ DDR!

sorry if im a bit confusuing! ... or wrong

Jack is right essentially. The RAM is actually running at 200mhz, but because DDR is transfering information twice per cycle, it's 'equivalent' to 400mhz SDR.

Latencies are pretty much how long various bits wait to collect an answer before passing it on. The lower the better, although different systems are have different sensitivities to this - ie it doesn't always make much difference.

I wrote a longer post about the speed things (not much on latencies though) just a few days ago here:

I think latencys can effect stuff like softsyths etc (I know sound latencys are mainly effected by the sound card but I'm faily sure RAM latencys help too).

What we mean by that is that the Core 2 Duo does enough pre-fetching and other optimisations to do with the fact the memory controller is on the motherboard, that reducing the latency on ram doesn't have as much benefit as reducing the latency had on AMD64 systems. However increasing the bandwidth (speed) does bring a noticable benefit. So as there's usually a trade off between speed and latency, you are better off going with speed for Core 2 Duo.
