    ATI X1950 Pro Overclocking

Never tried overclocking a graphics card (apart from the occational mega-hurt with my brothers 7900gs) and I was wondering a) If theres any point, b) How I would go about it, and c) Will my x1950 Pro be any good at it? XD.

    Thanks for any help
    With love and many thanks,

You can download ATITool and use that to overclock quite safely, it should bring some improvement...

Thanks for replying. I take it the usual warantee things apply? What kindo of clock should I aim for? 700 core? (from 580)

Erm, not sure about the warranty issues, if it does go wrong, ATITool stores your original settings anyway. It also uses clever magic to find the limits of your card automatically. It's difficult to describe without you seeing it. It's all quite intuitive.

Dont see a point really, shoudnt make that much of a difference.. bumping my stock clocks of X1800XT from 625MHz to 720MHz didn't make that much difference to begin with.. maybe 5ish%?

AFAIK, the X1950Pro have terrible VRM and VRM cooling.. your milage might vary as well.

But if you're adamant, 650-670MHz seems to be the upper limit me thinks. The mem is easy to tell, if the chip goes BJ12 then for sure that chip will hit around 1.5ish to 1.6ish Ghz..
    Me want Ultrabook

    .....
We are lucky it doesn't overheat at stock speeds. If you fit an aftermarket cooler that cools the VRMs, and fix heatsinks to them, then apparently this solves the problem.

Yeah any overclocking voids your warranty. You probably won't get anywhere near 700 core clock unless you have the sapphire ultimate version of the pro. Most people are not managing to overclock much at all, possibly due to VRM problems as mentioned.

IMO this card is probably best left running at stock, particularly with the XClio PSU, as you won't gain all that much in performance.

imo the 1950pro performs very well at stock anyway for £130 so no real need to try squeeze any more out of it - especially bearing in mind the hsf issues we have with it. Even if you dont overclock would be good to use ati tool to boost your fan speeds somewhat or you may face the "power off" screen of death

Lol! The main reason I got it is 'cos I keep getting blue screens of death with my onboard graphics (it had an almost 200% overclock ).

From about 250mhz to 510mhz hehe. It only has 3 pixel pipelines so it makes no difference .

Theres prolly no point trying to OC the new card you bought.
Besides the Gainward Bliss cards, its the quickest AGP around. WIth that in mind, ATI put poo colling on the cards which is the first problem. Secondly, i think you CPU will hold it back aswell.

Just enjoy it as it is because that card wont push too far imho.
