    Cooling

I am looking to either purchase or build a new PC next year.

If I purchase it will be likely to be the Vadim Cepheus but I would be more interrested in building the system from scratch.

With the sort of components im looking at (Core2 Quad, dual Geforce 8800GTX or next gen ATI, 4gb RAM, 4x 750gb HDD) Im not sure if air cooling would cut it.

Another requirement is for the PC not to sound like an idling jet plane which my current one does!

I notice that vapochill does a CPU cooler based on their phase changed systems, is this worth having? Also, I am looking at water cooling but Im not too sure if I can do this on my own as I dont want to knacker 4 grands worth of equipment,

If I was to go the water cooling route, how easy is it to set up and what sort of things do I need to buy?

Air cooling would be fine on that setup, assuming you put it in a high end, well ventilated case. If you go cheap on watercooling it can sometimes provide worse or equivalent cooling to high end air. But obviously with less noise.

I had the vapochill micro CPU cooler you are referring to. It was a damn good cooler, but no better or worse than any other very high end air cooler. Ive been running an Asetek Waterchill kit for about a year now and it does a far better job.

As for building your own water kit, you'll need:

Radiator (Minimum of 2x 120mm in size) e.g. Black Ice Extreme II
    Pump
    Barbs
Deionised water (can get from Halfords)
    Tubing
CPU/VGA/NB Water blocks (depending on what you wanna cool under water)
    Reservoir (optional nowadays)

Asetek, Zalman and some other brands do very good water bundles, which are very easy to set up. As long as you leak test before putting the loop in your PC, youll be fine.

I am intrigued by the "optional" reservoir, surely the water has to live somewhere? (sorry for being thick!!)

Also, are water cooled PCs maintanence free? IE I set the water cooling up and forget about it?

I would look at Phase change but I have not seen anything that doesnt need the Lian-Li PC70 (My current case) or that hideous case that they use....

Optional meaning that you can use a T-Line instead of a reservoir. Both have benefits and drawbacks. T-Lines are great if space is limited, or you just dont want a res, but they are harder to bleed, depending on where they are situated.

Depending on how much you have to spend, I would suggest going for some half decent separates, it doesnt work out that much more expensive, but you get exactly what you need.

Thermochill PA series rads are designed for low rpm/cfm fans so that takes care of the noise problem (they run fine with some yate loon fans undervolted to 7v).

You wont knacker anything if you take plenty of time to read up on what to do. If you cut corners, you can stuff it up royally, but if you take your time and plan it. read up and get the right bits, it should go well

Once its set up, it doesnt really require any maintenance. The water level shouldnt decrease really and as long as you use a water additive to stop algae, you should be fine. Ive had mine set up for ages and havent touched it.

Also, make sure youve got accidental damage cover on your household/posessions insurance

Take yourself immediately down to W H Smiths and purchase the current (Issue 040/January 2007) Custom PC. They have a detailed Water Cooling 101 guide in this issue - explains a great deal.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
