    Cooler for overclocking the E6300

Well my question is slightly different in that I'm not interested in O/C to the extreme (on air), and I think I'm right in saying the hotter a cpu runs it's life is shortened, well if you can only get 3 years out of a cpu it's no problem as you would put a higher speed cpu in, at dirt cheap prices.

So considering everything is it worth getting say a Scythe ninja at £30 compared to a retail box cooler from Intel for about £6? Well assuming intel's cooler only allows a modest O/C without heat and possible stabilty problems, is there a cooler in between say for about £12-£15 they would allow good overclocking?

You wont get very far on a stock intel heatsink and fan. It is worth investing in a decent cooler if you are going to be overclocking. The scythe ones are good, as are the thermalright Si-128 and arctic freezer pro (cheaper).

    Thanks for replying

Artic freezer pro is £17, from scan, that's ok for me, unless anyone can say I must spend £30.

you dont HAVE to spend £30, but if you decide you want to overclock higher, later on, you will have the cooling to do so, you can always add different fans to the scythe/thermalright heatsinks as well.

Well I suppose it's nice having a cool cpu at a very high O/C, but if the arctic can ensure a very good overclock and keep within the CPU limits on heat, I shall be happy.

Another vote for the Arctic Cooling Freezer. They are a cracking cooler for the cash - even better than most entry-level water systems.

yes yes arctic cooling freezer 7 pro is wicked awesome, but quite sizeable too so check it out for your case/mobo combination.
i've also had joy with zalman's.
when looking at HSF's remember to look for purely copper (Cu) ones, none of that aluminium stuff.
can't go much wrong with the freezer 7 pro tho, performance/price/low-noise etc

    safe

when you installed the Arctic Cooler Pro, did you clean off the thermal paste on the base or leave it on?? I bought some MX-1 which is apparently (according to the website) what is on the base, so I added a small blob and left the stuff on the base as is for a bit of extra protection. Havent powered up yet though - what do you think? Clean it all off and start again or should it be fine?

errr... it's not "protection"! it's a heat transfer conduit.... and so too much will have a negative effect on the performance of the HSF! the pre-applied stuff should be adequate, or yes u can remove and apply your paste of choice (a lot of people swear by Artic Silver 5). but not too much!
a small blob and use a credit card to spread. easy.

    Cheers supersan:
    good thing I checked, heh

bad wording, I know its not protection per se, it conducts the heat

didn't put too much on the cpu though so I'll just get some IPA and wipe it off

Well how are you supposed to do that? I'm creating a list to buy a system in about Jan/Feb, and my thinking is: Why buy a Bentley when a Mercedes or BMW will do.
So if I have a E6300 on a P5B deluxe, arctic cooler, with a corsair PSU how do I find out what VG case is suitable for about £50.
