    Power supply decision time...

    Hi,

I know its a massive market, there are too many brands with too many similar designs, specs, and prices.

    I've narrowed down my options...

I want 450-550W, my current shortlist is...

    AKASA Paxpower 500W (AK-P050FG7)
    550W Xclio Greatpower (X14S4P3)
    OCZ Modstream 450W

My price range is a low as possible, the max I want to spend is £65. I dont like paying extra for brands and image!

My main reason for buying a new PSU is purely down to fan noise, my current 400W PSU is noisey. I want less noise, and I believe the above are quiet PSU's? Though the XClio I cant seem to find a decent review of, so please help me out here guys, I need efficient good power as I overclock my AMD 64 am2 chip AND my X1950Pro PCI-E card, but need some more silence in my case!

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Alan

The modular Hiper PSU's are pretty good and dont cost the earth either.

    Edit: eg http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/98562

    With a 120mm fan they're very quiet.

The Corsair 520w PSU comes very highly recommended, especially bythe guy here that works for them... ;0)

£69 at Scan so only slightly above budget...

The Hipers are average at best and there is FAR better out there for your budget.

    Like this Enermax:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=284213

    or this XCLIO
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=375887

    or this Fortron
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=271185

    or this Corsair
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=446788

    to name a few.

The Corsair is excellent as is the Enermax (both modular and practicly silent with 120MM fans)
The Fortron is rock solid and a great PSU
The XCLIO is also modualr and excellent value.

    That's simply not true.

Every review for the Hiper 580W Type R I've found has been outstanding and the one in my main rig has performed flawlessly.

These were the first four reviews I found (no cherry picking) :-

The thing that I have discovered with PSUs is that cheap ones are crap, but even the more expensive ones have their own quirks and imperfections, and many of them have awful design flaws.

Personally, I wont ever buy a Tagan or FSP again, but other people have had good results with them. By the same token, I have only had good results with Enermax, and others havent.

So just go with a decent brand that is doing well at the moment and youll be ok.

How flawlessly?????? Have you measured with DMM...If so give us the results!! Thats the only way anyone can tell the 'run flawlessly' statement you provided to be correct.
The Hipers are weak on the 12V <<<----fact
and i have tested them on 2 SLI systems and it has reinforced that fact.

    Believe what you like.
    The Hipers are average..........
    Nuff said!

Personally i dont care what people buy.....im giving you my informed opinion. If you think you know better then go ahead.
The look good i'll admit that, and the connectors are great but in no way, shape or form are they a good SLI PSU.

I can GUARANTEE though...the PSUs i offered up are ALL better!!!

As advised by some - stick with Seasonic or Corsair (rebranded Seasonic).

Most are happy with them I believe.

Other's I've used and am happy with Enermax/Fortron/FSP.

No, you give your readings. You're the one claiming without any evidence that they're not up to the job. On the other hand, I've backed up my claims with multiple reviews from respected sources + the fact that they're recommended for SLI use on DFI boards (the DFI community are a pretty tough bunch to please).

Using bold huge, !!!!!!!, ?????????? or UPPERCASE just makes you look desperate. How about some facts? Otherwise you just look like a shill/fanboy.

I dont wish to get into a flame war with you and i wont.
Im not desperate to get my facts across either! Its the only way sometimes to get the point across to some unfortunately.

Those reviews that you believe in so much are old and when the Hiper came out. The hardware today is far more advanced than it was when those reviews were constructed.
I must admit, i was VERY suprised at Jasons review in February as im a long-standing member on EOCF and i guarantee, if you bother to read their forums, that the opinions on Hipers of people that actually use them are very different from yours and Jasons (when the review was made almost a year ago).

Did you actually read the reviews or just the conclusions at the end?
    1. Viperlair review - It was only running a 6600GT
    2. Jason review, i suspect, was using a 6800GT (i will PM him later and ask).
    3. The Phoronix review - 2x6800Gt's(old now) with an old CPU and only 512mb Ram
    4. Pimprig didnt list specs at all so it looks to me that the opinions were theirs rather than facts.

Now......if you have any real, more up to date evidence then please share it.

If you like the Hipers, or own one (i think thats the case), then great.....good luck and i hope it stays stable.
But to recommend it when you:
    a). only read old reviews
b). most likely use one and use software to gauge its power <<-----worst thing you can do
c). Think its as good or better than Seasonic/Enermax/Corsair/Fortron/OCZ
    this is clearly not right.

Franky, some of your comments are misleading by making these claims in a round about way when you are clearly incorrect.

Like i said, im in no way looking for a flame war as i dont wish to be banned and i cant put any more 'meat on the bones' to this argument as i have made the case.

Im not saying its a bad PSU (for a lower end rig).....im just saying its very very average.

I also think that anyone reading this thread is capable of making their decision now from reading your pro's and my con's.

(and FYI...i cant see any huge print...only yours)

Two bad reviews out of 45. The rest were all 5*. Not a 4* among them.

A quick search and some guy (again, the first I found) is happily running :-
