what a little beauty.....

I found 2 tiny little addresses faulty, on my TWIN MOS stick of mem when run at PC2700 , even at 7-3-3 2.5

The stick of Infineon in the other slot passed even at PC2700 6-2-2-2 so I nicked the matching pair for it from Sair's (the other halfs) P4 which only runs it at PC2100 speeds, dropped both sticks of Infineon in, tightened up that timing and ran MEMTEST and its all clear. Her P4 is fine on the Twinmos at 2100 speeds.

I BELIEVE (*prays*) that is the reason for my random lock ups......

a little address at 194mb position and one at 74 on one stick of otherwise perfect ram. Only test 3 and 4 showed it up...the others were perfect.

That could indeed be the issue.

I stuck 256Mb DDR in my dad's computer once, and one day it decided it wasn't going to let us log on. I had to run a restore from backups - considered it a "glitch." However, when the same thing happened a week later I got suspicious.

I ran memtest on the stick and there was an error at 160Mb - just 1 bit of memory, but on test 3 the screen was filled with errors at that bit.

It would seem some sort of system resource was loaded into that memory location - and was becoming corrupted and written to disk "bad."

So, even the smallest error can have serious consequences.

Its ironic cos I had it on a floppy anyway..just never thought it would be MEMORY causing me giref...and aint tried it yet...the test took all my sparetime.

Yeah - top program. Only from testing dodgy machines (and lots of dodgy generic RAM from Scan) do I know it's well worth a pop. First thing I do with anything I've bought for my own use or selling on to someone else is memtest it, then prime 95 for at least 3-4 hours. It's the only way to be sure...
