    upgrade help

    Hello,

    at the minute i'm running a Shuttle ST20G5 with athlon64 3200+ (skt939), 1gb ram, sapphire x800gto2 blah blah blah.

What i wondered is, is it worth upgrading my whole box (I reckon i'd get about £250 for the old one) to an AM2 or Intel Dual core mobo/processor/ram? It'd mean i'd have to get a whole new computer, except for the graphic card and hard drives. Is it worth it right now? The other option is to get a dual core skt939 processor and keep that for a while?

What do you guys think? Thanks

What's wrong with your computer? There is no point in uograding unless:- you want to do something it can't properly do now, or you have plenty of spare cash, or you just have the upgrade bug.

I'm upgrading cos I'm getting fed up with my slow XP2000 and my graphics card as blown and taken the agp circuit with it.

well, the thought was that i would sell up now whilst my current box still has a bit of value, then use spare cash/christmas money to keep up with the current trends.

I was only looking at this because AMD appear to be getting rid of 939s and i don't want to end up with an obsolete computer (i.e. that i can't upgrade) in 6 months time.

I guess you could call it the upgrade bug brought on by the thought of a christmas present...

Sounds like a a fair point; sell what you have now while it still has value and upgrade to something better.

I would definitely upgrade to a C2D system, maybe basing you system around a E6300/ASUS P5B to start, 2GB of ram etc.

    Get that upgrading going!

Ok.....Well I don't know anything about AM2, as I have been studying the Intel upgrade route for 3 weeks and one thing for sure is:- an Intel E6300 OEM with an arctic pro freezer for about £125 is a bargain.

Scan don't seem to be listing the E6300 OEM ATM, last price IIRC was £93 + vat.

Well it could be vapour ware if OEM stocks are drying up, as why would Scan stop supplying them if there was a demand.
For me, I've planned to buy my upgrade in Jan/Feb and don't want to rush into the scramble for an OEM (assuming a supply problem)........hey who knows the box version might be cheaper after Xmas, so I wont have lost a few £££s.

alright cool, thanks for your help guys. i think i'll probably sell up and invest in core 2 duo setup. what do you think of shuttles? i like the small form factor and quietness, but the lack of upgradability is a bit annoying. is there a size in between shuttle size/midi tower that you'd think would look good in a living room?

    Again, thanks for the replies

For the living room I think you either want to stick with a Shuttle, or go the Micro-atx motherboard and media PC case route.

I rather liked the look of this Antec case or the one a twice the cost but with a volume control for my living room.

They're nice looking cases indeed...I was looking at the Shuttle sd37p2 barebones, what do you think of that? Do you think it'sreally expensive for what you get?

how long do you think intel will stay with the 775 processors?
