    Should i overclock?

Im just wondering whether i should overclock my core duo E6300, i was going to do it anyway but i was advised not to as "apparently" it can damage my CPU. I wasnt going to go up to CPU damaging terratory anyway. so i was just wondering whether i should or not?

and also what should i overclock it to? my motherboard is a Gigbyte GA 965-P and my RAM is 2x512mb DDR2 6400, i have standard intel cooler aswell.

    thanks

    Nick

It should be safe to overclock your system, but think about whether it would benefit you much. You can probably get the system to 330mhz fsb without any real effort.
Your CPU may end up faster, but you will be limited by the other components in your system.

this is all i could really afford, as i wanted a dual core system. what parts are letting me down?

i was thinking of adding some more RAM in the near future and maybe a better graphics card.

Buy a better cooler (they are inexpensive), overclock the CPU and buy some more RAM.

    Chks

It amazes me how many people never mention what they want their computer to do.....horses for courses.

Hey Clunk, ran orthos for 14 hours yesterday and everything seemed fine, even fired up a quick game of GRAW after just for good measure CPU hit 51oC, mobo was around 39oC..

DO those temps sound OK? Just checking if I applied the thermal paste correctly before trying an o/c

personally, i find my c2d fast enough, its a 6400 with Team Xtreem PC6400 (should hit ultra-shizzle speeds) and an arctic freezer 7. Haven't got round to buying tubing to fit the water cooling yet but ive never really felt the urge to overclock. i was running an opty for ages, as i always felt i could get a little faster, but not this bad boy

i have a pretty small overclock on my 6400 run it at 2.6ghz and it flys through just about every game but if you are using x800gto you are limited by what your graphics card can do so personally wouldnt bother til you get more powerful card

I have not had a lot of success with overclocking in the past with Socket A Athlons, but I now believe this to be down to a fundamental mis-understanding of RAM speeds.

I now have a new E6700 and plan to build a new PC round it - and once it is built and running stably, I plan to revisit this overclocking 'dark art' and will be aiming for 3.5GHz or better!

Must be rock solid stable though - I can't bear a crashing PC!
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

im not going for max overclocking at the moment for the 6300. The max im going to go is around 2.5ghz per core, atleast until i get another GB of ram, a better cooler and a better GFX card.
